idk horny fandom grab your ovaries or something , i assume that's the sentiment
Thanks for clarifying! I got confused because I saw a lot of posts saying that yaoi is homophobic as a whole. I still feel like trash for reading BL even though it's a last resort for me. It's fun to see how fujoshis went from Captain Tsubasa doujins to now.
Oh no! Don’t let other people make you feel bad about liking BL!!! Seriously, I’m getting Fahrenheit 451 (or Toshokan Sensou for the anime generation) vibes from this trend of policing fiction and people’s fantasies :/ And the thing is it’s mostly women who are oppressed by such things, because most men don’t give a fuck if someone comes at them with this, while many women try to adjust to what seems to be expected from them as the “right” thing.
I don’t think fiction should be regulated. Fiction is fiction, not real life, and I don’t think people should be judged for enjoying certain types of fiction. Nor do I think certain types of fiction should disappear just because I don’t like them. Nowadays everything seems to be approached in an extreme way, even though things are not black or white. Like, objectification of women is bad, things should not be sold with naked women etc, but I don’t think naked women or fanservice with women should disappear from male-oriented fiction, because it’s natural for heterosexual men to be interested in that. The same way, I don’t think it’s bad for men to steal glances at women and their bodies on the streets, because they can’t help but be interested, BUT they should keep that to themselves, no staring, no whistling, no commentary, no complimenting strangers and of course no touching! You can have a sexual interest, but don’t push it onto others, that’s all.
Of course the same should be true for women and male bodies, be it fictional or real. No woman should be judged for liking men, male bodies and sex - even if it’s with two men. Just remember, nobody scorns men for liking lesbian porn, or even if they do, men won’t care. Fiction is really just fiction and fantasy is fantasy, you don’t have to feel bad liking it. This is a message I want to send to everyone, who wavers because others try to oppress them in the name of a nonexistent righteousness or fake moral superiority simply for liking certain types of fiction or pairing or whatever. Fiction is not toxic or problematic, it’s the people who try to convince you it is.
there are lets plays of persona 5 on youtube but it's mostly dudes making gross comments about Ann and the 'homos' in the game :/
that's arguably worse than not existing. damn
I think instead of policing the person who endorses such and such and create a culture of callout posts for the most pettiest reason, they should do something about it in irl. If a piece of media is so graphically violent and feels just in displaying that violence, then I am all for people petitioning to cancel it. It's important for readers and creators to take responsibility for how certain sensitive material is conveyed. That way we could actually have a nuanced discussion about it.
The problem is, who gets to decide what’s too violent and based on what values? What’s senseless violence for one might hold some meaning for another. Depending on the person, worldview, cultural background and so on things might be understood in a completely different way. I don’t believe that the more people are shouting about something it will be right - people are too easy to brainwash. Petitions to cancel things are actually not that different from callout posts just from the pre-internet era, and they can lead to similar extremities. Makes me think of the movement against harmful books in 50s Japan when parents started to attack manga they thought were harmful - and they meant children’s manga among them Tezuka Osamu’s works currently seen as classics, because they thought sci-fi was stupid. There were discussions between the parties, but the movement also burnt books at some instances. Of course discussion is good and necessary, but I don’t believe that the intention to cancel, ban or forbid things will lead to that, it will rather lead to oppression. As long as it’s fiction I am against any kind of ban, because any type of portrayal of even sensitive material might be valid. Also, if we banned everything somebody has a problem with there will literally be nothing left. Instead of banning I’m all for correct labels and warnings, and reviews also exist for a reason, that should be enough. Erasure and bans lead to nothing good in my opinion.
What is your favourite BL trope and your least favourite?
Thanks for the question! I wouldn’t exactly call these tropes, but the type of BL I tend not to read is the violent one. I mean the latest trend of physical abuse, rape and mostly mindfuck. For this reason I was untouched the hype around Harada for example. Also I don’t like overbearing tops and when a relationship is established by breaking the unwilling other into it. I’m not a fan of forcing someone to his happiness, and I hate seeing someone’s pride trampled upon (with the exception of overconfident jerks, I like to see those broken XD;). This does not mean, however, that I only like fluff, far from it. I’m pretty interested in Psyche Delico’s Tourou no Ori for example, even though it’s having many elements I usually dislike - while also having many I do like. Or there is Kashio’s Kokoro wo Korosu Houhou - I wouldn’t say I like it and it’s hard for me to read, but it’s intriguing. I might usually avoid the above-mentioned elements, but I’m most definitely not one of those who obsess over ‘healthy relationships‘ and I don’t believe in ‘bad BL tropes’. It’s fiction, and while it is important how artists use the given elements, it is just as important how the reader is using the text in the end.
As for my fave trope, I’m hopelessly weak against unloved, insecure characters finding someone who loves them for the first time in their lives ^^ Of course there are many others I like, but this is probably the one that always gets to me regardless of how many versions I read of it :D
screeching at brideshead revisited in the thumbnail of amandamaryanna's recent video "why the old money aesthetic never gets old"
I don't know youtubers so I have no idea who that is but honestly they're right to drag it a lil bit 😂
i'm having a GW watch party with my friend too (its her first time with mecha anime) i'm hoping to get her to watch 00 as well but it might feel like whiplash going from tossing a cabbage to distract the enemy to NOT KILLING THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR A CIVIL WAR JUST BECAUSE YOU HEARD CHILDREN SINGING
First of all, deciding to have a GW watch party is 10/10 the best thing anyone can do right now. I think everything I devote my time to should be something I loved years and years ago. What is your friend thinking of it? Who is her fave pilot so far?? I am finding that my tastes have changes a bit since my initial watches back in the day...
Secondly... I have never watched any other Gundam series!! Gundam was my gateway into fandom and from here I jumped into Newsies and LoTR RPS and HP and so on over the last *cough* 20 years... Should I watch 00? I have heard it compared to GW but have still never ventured out... though, your description of killing over children singing is intriguing...
