The way I always understood it (and I could be wrong) is that “les” would be pronounced “lez” as in a short form of the word lesbian.

oh my god, I think you might be right. the incorrect way to say "les" would definitely be "lez", so that's probably where it comes from. lez miserables. the miserable lesbians.

for us, the common pronunciation is supposed to be the french, but a lot of people screw it up and because of the shortening to les mis (pronounced “miz”) a lot of people assume it rhymes i think. and lez is short for lesbians sometimes. (it’s weird)

I think the lez instead of les theory is the most probable. as for the proper pronunciation, like, I know I shouldn't judge and people are trying and it's good and all that, but god, some are putting way too much emphasis on the a, it's like "Les Misérââââââââbles". like Anne Hathaway, I love her to death and want to bear her child, but Anne. Anne.

if any letter in that word is to be emphasized, it's the i. it's "Les Miiiisérables", not "Misééééérables" or "Miséraaaables". and for the love of god, the s is mute, and ble isn't a "bel" sound. you don't bounce on the l, you let it slip.

... that last sentence makes more sense in my head.

I'm not even going to get near John Valjohn and Cassette.
