I try not to be critical for the sake of it, and I am not here to harsh any squees (I love how excited peeps are, don’t let me pee on your Cheerios, please keep loving it).  I am simply asking aloud, why things were done in certain ways.  I plan to talk about all the characters one at a time to try and sort out my feelings.  I even had issues with my old faves, trust me. I welcome critical thoughts on everything.  It all helps me sort my brain out. :)

First up, Finn. (spoilers ahead)

I don’t know who exactly is responsible for Finn’s character not sitting well with me, because I feel like it’s a combination of things.  

First up, I actually loved Finn’s introduction, as a conflicted solider, caught in his first battle and being terrified.  I love that, I was ready to see a young man question his belief structure, question war, question the order of things.  He began very strong, I loved his being batted about as a nameless thing and how that resonated with me.  So many of us in this world feel like we’re just bricks in the wall, here for others to use.  I loved seeing Finn sort of mentally grapple with that.  Lord, I wanted more.

I loved the idea of Finn, I feel that the director just couldnt commit to what kind of man he was supposed to be.  He went from a very serious beginning, a touching beginning, into what feels like a comedic sidekick.  Had I been Abrams, I’d have had Finn’s body langue and dialogue changes slowly over the course of him discovering his own beliefs, his own personage.  Why not have a young man, who was bred and trained to be a soldier, have very rigid, upright body language at first.  Why doesn’t he accidentally call Rey “Captain”, or even Han, simply out of habit?  Why doesn’t he ask what to do more often, given that he hasn’t had to truly make his own decisions in a very, very long time, if ever?  Give me that believable fear, that hard, ingrained training so that I can watch it slowly melt off of him, like shedding a skin that’s not his own (would have played so nicely with wearing Poe’s jacket, a new skin, a new man).  I wanted that kind of believable pain because it would have felt three times as good to watch him defeat it.  His smile would have felt 10 times as bright for me.

Continuing the critique of the character’s in world presence, Finn’s language, body and verbal, felt very out of world to me.  I couldn’t tell what was Boyega and what was Finn. An actor’s job is to portray a character in a world that feels genuine, and he kept missing that mark for me.  The “droid please” moment took me right out of the world and made that scene feel like something from the MCU, not Star Wars.  Someone described it online as “Whedon-esque” and I completely agree.  It was one of those “I’m the Juggernaut, bitch!”, moments that totally shattered my immersion in the world.  Same with the part where he holds Phasma captive and makes her take the Starkiller’s shields down.  The cocky “Who’s in charge now, who’s in charge now, Phasma?”, felt soooo childish (not in a good way) and out of place.  I would have expected that to be more subtle, some glances, maybe something more poignant like Finn asking Phasma why she doesn’t think for herself.  What if he’d asked her why she is there, why she’s part of The Order, and she just says nothing because she doesn’t have her own answer, she too is just a tool of the army.  Why didn’t he tell her to remove her helmet so he could SEE her eyes?  There’s so many ways it could have been played to build Finn, and Phasma, who was criminally underused in this movie (but that’s for another time).

And then there’s the Force.  Everyone is bickering about if Finn is or is not Force sensitive.  I’m ok either way, but I will say that it’s very confusing.  I feel like there’s so much confusion about who our main protagonist is because Abrams won’t allow them to be their OWN characters.  He’s too busy making sure EVERYONE has the same superpowers.  I’d be fine if Finn was Force sensitive, but I feel they should have saved that for the next movie maybe.  This movie concentrated so much on Rey, and made her a very obvious Force sensitive character from the get-go, so let that be her story for the first movie.  They’ve clothed her just like a Jedi, and made sure Jedi is printed all over her, let her have that arc for now.  Finn, however, is a soldier learning how to be himself, learning when to run and when to fight.  I feel they should have let this movie concentrate on his confrontation with himself.  That is so powerful and takes so much bravery, a true inner force (sorry Im a cheeseball).  Having both Rey and Finn appearing Force sensitive felt extremely forced, no pun intended, and to me it distracted from what could have been terrific for Finn’s character in this film. (I say force a lot, I’m sorry)

And of course, I can’t leave without talking about the one thing everyone is talking about: romance.  I am so down for romance, y’all.  The older I get, the more I crave good, solid chemistry between characters.  When I was a kid I yowled like a sick panther every time I had to sit through dumb kissy-faces, but as an adult, I quite like it.  *slams fists on table* Let it be known that I am here for good romance!  I did not feel this was good.  I did not feel deep romantic chemistry with Rey and Finn.  They tried, but they didn’t sell it to me in a way I could taste.  Again, that goes back to stilted directing on Abram’s part, and poor writing.  We have a young dude who’s a soldier in what looks like a totalitarian regime, yet he seems completely on point to flirt with Rey?  Asks if she has a cute boyfriend, runs after her constantly, grabs her hand, I just...it felt again like Finn was not the character the script presented him to be, from his origin.  I know soldiers don’t have to be complete emotionless spacepods, but in this particular case I think it would have made Finn’s arc more individualized, if he’d started to discover those feelings just a tad later. Just a tad.

If they decide to make Rey/Finn a thing, cool, but for now I actually dont ship Rey with anyone.  I feel like her character is so not there yet.  I feel like she has so much personal drive right now in the story that romance is not on her agenda.  Later, perhaps, and that’d be fine with whoever.  Finn, though, I must say if you’re gonna ship him he had more chemistry with Poe.  I don’t ship them myself, it comes across as sort of an older bro, younger bro thing to me, but that is only my interpretation.  I am not here for ship shaming, not at all.  I’ve seen girls wear their boyfriends letter jackets, and I’ve seen older brothers and fathers pass their favorite fatigues or jackets to their young brothers or kids.  You see superheroes pass their cape onto a child that looks up to them, etc, etc. I think it’s all completely fine to interpret Finn/Poe however you like.  I’m quite happy to see shippers excited for them!  I just hope that if they do hook Finn up with someone, it feels real.  I’d like for at least one thing about Finn to feel real, because nothing else did for me. He deserves it.  

Lastly, and I may be stepping out of my lane here, please forgive me, but I just feel like Finn could have represented some very real world struggles of today with more finess.  Him being a young man, an African American young man, in a world where he’s been taught from birth to be a certain way.  The Storm Trooper suit is white, uniform across the board, and hard and plastic, binding.  It mimics Fury Road in it’s symbolism, which I’m sure was not a mistake.  The movie was noticeably loud with it’s symbolism, but I think it’s a good way to connect young people (and old people) to what is happening in society to young men of color, and young men as a whole group.  Having Finn question his place in the army of uniformity, having him be a number instead of a person, perhaps not understanding his own feelings or emotions, heck even knowing when to fight and when to run.  What parts of what you’ve been taught are worth keeping, and what do you burn in the grass fields of your memory?  What IS right, and what IS wrong, because every side thinks they’re right, so who do you believe?  These issues face us all today, women and men, young and old, all races.  I felt Finn’s character could have mirrored this beautifully, in the hands of a more capable directing and writing team.  (Thank God for fans cause I know you guys see this already.)

To build upon that, what would have been a hugely poignant thing to do with Finn, was during his meeting with Maz Kanata, when she comes closer to his eyes.  She speaks beautifully about seeing, and what the eyes of different people see.  What an incredible moment it would have been to insert some social commentary there.  From some people’s eyes, they think they are the heroes, but in others’ eyes they are the monsters.  Today, we see that happening everywhere.  We must learn to look through eyes that aren’t ours, even if it means adjusting our view, ala how Maz adjusted her goggles to see Finn more closely.  Likewise Finn’s angry reaction was awesome.  We must also hide the pain we carry in our own eyes so that others do not see it.  “Seeing” is important to Finn’s character arc.  Seeing who he is, seeing the side he’s on, seeing himself inside, seeing truth.  I wish they’d circled this message back around later on.  It would have tied him back to Maz Kanata (Lupita N’yongo) and made that so much more heartfelt.  (I loved Maz btw, people calling her orange Yoda make me want to fart on their dinner)

In closing, I blame every problem with Finn, and the rest of SWTFA, squarely on Abrams and his team, not the actors or actresses.  Actors are at the mercy of the director most times, and from literally everything I’ve seen of Abrams, he just failed these people all for his own fanboy, and his “easter eggs” that he loves so much.  He did the same thing with Star Trek: Into Darkness.  Y’all I ADORE BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH, and I was FURIOUS what Abrams did with that film.  BC wasn’t even necessary, but Abrams loves Sherlock and had to have him in it 9_9.  I just wish someone less concerned with playing up fan yucks had been at the help of this movie.  The franchise is terrific, and yes, we old fans love some callbacks to the originals, but good Lord there is a limit.  Abrams does not do limits, except with character writing.  He’s shown time and time and time again that he cannot do character.  He can’t do depth, he can’t do tragedy, he can’t do real drama.  He absolutely can’t make a pay off, and I think Finn is probably the saddest offense for me.  If you need me to throw someone else under the bus, Lucas failed the same way with Padme and Anakin.  Charlize Theron is magnificent but Aeon Flux exists (not to mention the waste of her in Prometheus, hork). It’s all directing, and it pains me to see beautiful characters completely fall flat due to a poor director.

I will continue to turn to fandom for more depth for Finn.  I choose to believe there’s more to him than what Abrams gave us, and fans are terrific about sniffing that out.  I think he has a great journey ahead, and I’m excited to see if we get more meaty development for him.  I was disappointed as heck that he was knocked out at the end of the movie.  Again, would have been a terrific time to show him confronting his fight or flight inner conflict.  Show us his EYES, like Maz pointedly said, augh.  Anyways, I hope to see more, Finn.  I know you’re capable of being the man you want to be. <3

EDIT: One last thing I’d like to add is that I in no way want to bash Finn as a character himself, nor do I lay claim to him, as I know he was not made for me.  While I believe everything is open to critique, I also really love that little boys, especially little boys (and girls) of color have him in their favorite sci-fi action story.  I am more than thrilled, and I’d pee my leg to see kids running around like Finn, having a good time.  That’s truly what Finn is here for, so my critique and wank is not for those little guys.  This is more for older fandom, writers, people who are interested in critique of pop culture.  Seeing kids happy with Star Wars is like pure sugar, I love it, and I wouldn’t take that away from them, ever.
