ngl I locked into finishing my submissions so hard that I don't even have a character sheet for the Toon forms of the Oceanids lmaooo. All I had was a concept of what their hair would look like (fun fact: Tyyde was supposed to have hair that changed length based on her proximity to Astro!) and a single line about their personality or behavior. As such, all the Twisteds were done on the fly. I wrote up mechanics that I'd base the designs around on day one, and then each design I came up with while finishing the Oceanid prior.
I started with Twirl first because I knew intimately what I wanted to do with her. I really ate with her design IDKKK. If I had to rank them it'd be M!Twisted Twirl > Tsuna > Tyyde. Tyyde's design was the weakest imo, so I did Tsuna last so as to end on a higher note! My philosophy was to experiment more with each Oceanid, so on top of increasing the amount of body shown I was trying more effects. With Tyyde I tried translucency and to make her water glittery. With Tsuna, it was adding texture to her boots and making her hair look like crashing waves.
Tsuna was very fun to create and probably the most dynamic drawing I have made like. Ever. GO GIRLLL! I had two designs for her in particular: the one that I ended up choosing and another where her ship is on her head. For the latter design a break in the hull would show her eye, and she'd still be carrying the anchor. That one didn't make the cut because I already had to wing the horse conch shell for Tyyde andddd idk abt modeling a whole ass ship. It would be cool though?! Like, imagine getting to Astro's floor and you see this solitary flag bobbing and weaving through the air. Then you get closer and it's a wrecked ship kept "afloat" by a monstrous wave that charges at you like a battering ram. man....
If I ever get back to redoing their Twisted designs I'd def lean more into the fact that they're figments of magic/Astro's imagination and give them more space theming or abstract elements. Especially for Tyyde! I leaned more into, well, the tide. But it would have been better for her if I leaned into the fact that she's a daemon of daydreaming. Now that I'm here I'm thinking of another form where she's like a pearl in a clam? But as you approach her you get spaghettified because she's actually a black hole! Tidal forces are crazy son!!!
Man... When you think about it? The ladies got Twisted before they even got to live 😭🙏 I am a bad OC owner lmaooo
On that note though I am not sure what I'll do with them now! I never envisioned myself ever creating OC & Canon content, so what am I doing here with not one but three characters whose existence is squarely tied to Astro??? The brain truly works in mysterious ways...
I do want to keep them around though! But, then I'd have to design backwards and get regular forms from them out of their Twisteds ahaha. rip to me
anyways uhhh some quick fun facts to end this off
1. tyyde's hair was supposed to be longer. i ended up cutting it way shorter and i liked it more
2. tyyde's starfish eye also shows the Twisted symptom of red eyeballs. each arm has a single red dot!
3. all the Oceanids were designed to mimic astro's eye situation where his left eye is functional despite not being a traditional eyeball. with twirl, there's a red epicenter to the whirlpool in her face. tyyde, the aforementioned starfish. and then with tsuna it's the fact that the star on her eyepatch has also changed to be red. i was mulling over the idea of her having a normal eye underneath, but the eyepatch BEING the eye is super fun.
4. they don't have last names as they aren't mains, but they still sign their names differently! Twirl the Whirlpool with all the dots and o's swirled. Tyyde Tide because it rolls off the tongue better and daydreams are never formal. Tsuna-mi (written as TSUna-MI) to imitate a wave.
5. i forgot to make. the color reference for twirl. 🌚 i did remember for tyyde and tsuna
6. there is a larger variant of my twirl submission that included her mechanics and description, but it was too big for Tumblr
7. tsuna was meant to be a surfer and a stereotypical pirate. the surfer aspect was abandoned to have her look like a swashbuckler instead, but she's still a surfer gal in spirit...
8. twirl and tyyde were based on ginger while tsuna was based off shrimpo!
9. there was going to be a fourth Oceanid named turbi but weeeee are not doing allat so she was scrapped
