I'm sorry to bother you all when I can tell already you get a buuunch of asks regarding psychosis and psychotic episodes. I just.. don't know where to go, and what I have read so far in your tags doesn't help. Idk if I can keep this short. Twice now I've had weird... auditory thingies. It happened first about two weeks ago, then just tonight (well morning now). Whenever the speaker system is on (I don’t sleep in a bedroom), no matter WHAT setting it’s on, I hear something like…. (1)
A garbled transmission. Like when the radio dial is turned just a bit away from the station’s actual signal. I don’t hear anything concrete, just static and a garbled, mumbled voice. I don’t know what it’s saying, if anything. The first time it happened I switched between a CD player, the satellite, and this time the actual radio. I’ve been trying to rationalize it, but it’s hard to keep my paranoia down. Especially since no one else heard it when I brought them down to check out the (2)the sounds for themselves. It’s always a bit louder than the volume, seems to come from the speakers but NOT the channel/cd/radio. Like it sounds separate. But in the direction of the speakers. It’s happened when I’ve been up a while, so I was thinking maybe those sleep hallucinations, only they’ve never happened to me before, and I’ve been mentally ill since I was a child. The first time I thought maybe being over-tired mixed with a benzo might have been the cause, but (3? welp)but tonight I wasn’t anxious and didn’t have any extra meds. I was just laying down, not even ready to sleep bc my mind was still wide awake. If you can even point me in a direction please let me know; I’m scared what my psychiatrist or therapist will do if I’m just overreacting and not hearing anything unusual, but freak out to them anyways. Also I’m so sorry for the many asks and the rambling. I feel bad but I don’t know where to go for info.
Hello! You’re not a bother ^^It’s not unheard of for people to be scared of the possibility of having hallucinations. If you tell your therapist, I doubt it’d go over horribly. They’ve probably heard several situations like yours before, from all types of people. So you’ve heard unprecedented noise from the sound system no one else could hear twice. Once when having stayed up for many hours and with a benzo, once when you were rested and with no medication or stress. Since you went through the tags, you probably saw this answer about off-shoot hallucinations. I think since your experiences were only two weeks apart, this makes it different from those. It’s something you’ll want to continue taking note of for now. The reason I’m thinking this is an hallucinatory experience as opposed to just interference or some other glitch is ‘cause you said others couldn’t hear it while you could. If I were you, I’d bring it up just so they’re aware and there’s a background in place. As it is right now, I’m not sure anything would really be done about it. If it never happens again, then it doesn’t and it’s no big deal. If it begins escalating and even other symptoms start popping up, then there’s early awareness for it in place and you can receive help early, which is quite valuable. As far as hypnagogic, hypnopompic, and sleep deprivation hallucinations go, you don’t need to have a lifelong history of those or be mentally ill to have them. People of all sort can have a run-in with them, especially under sleep deprivation.I hope this answer is helpful in some way. Also it’s much better to ramble than not give any detail at all! You didn’t ramble anyway, you explained the situation well.- Mod Alex
