“Hmmh.” He hums low in the throat, that growling sound located somewhere between attention and dismissal. Balthazar clicks his tongue and continues flicking through the papers on his desk. The expenses are covered. That is not even up for discussion. He has no business putting his field team out on the streets on such grounds. Of course, there are other matters to tend to. Such as arrest warrants, quite haphazardly composed.
“As it is, Ms Bouchard, I find very little to encourage in this behavior.” At last, the director lifts his gaze. The room is thick with milky light, painting both the man and the woman in front of him in blurry contrast. “Grand theft auto? Again?”
He doesn’t wait for a response. His heavy head lowers once again and he disappears behind his paperwork. Balthazar clears his throat. “Well, that simply won’t do, considering the turnout. Especially since the data you compiled in your reports is less than satisfactory, not just for you but the entire group. But I must say, this is unusual.”
The papers return to the stack. Instead, Balthazar swivels to the laptop that sits open next to an ashtray. The clacking resumes at a faster pace as files pop up in rapid succession. His eyes slide back over to Vicky, studying her. He does have to wonder. Has she been sleeping, has she been eating? With the girl it’s never a given. This would typically be the part where a more empathetic person would attempt to... ask after his employee’s well-being. Right.
“You do— You do seem distracted lately. Is something the matter?”
