Why should we be ashamed to own a Crosley?

Crosleys have a straight arm with a heavy ceramic cartridge that cannot be replaced. If you need to replace the cartridge you’re shit out of luck. Time to buy a new turntable.

A Crosley will degrade the quality of your records much, much faster than better quality turntables. But it doesn’t matter because the built-in speakers are going to make all your albums sound like shit anyway. 

It’s not even worth buying Crosleys for their looks or price because if you were willing to do the bare minimum of research on good turntables and put just a little bit of time into looking, you could find a nice, affordable secondhand turntable with like, an actual wood finish instead of some cheap decal. And with actually decent tone arms, cartridges, drives or whatever. 

And by not buying a Crosley, you open up the possibility to upgrade components over time, which means you’re making an investment on what can be a lifelong hobby.

Buying a Crosley just seems like a way for people to get into the hobby of collecting vinyl just for the aesthetic or what it adds to their “hip, retro” image than for reasons that might be more fulfilling. It says that a collector doesn’t want to put any effort into reading up and figuring out how to dive in to the hobby.

This is the only time I’ll answer this kind of ask. From now on I’ll just be responding with a photo of Papa John.
