Missing Don Williams today. It was an honor to know him and call him my friend. I treasure the many great conversations we had together over coffee about cars and other things over the years. When I first met him I was rather star-struck and called him “Mr. Williams”. He looked back at me, smiled and said, “It’s just Don”. He was an icon in the classic car industry, but always friendly to everyone, full of warmth and humility. The 1957 Rambler Rebel was a very fast car in its day. Motor Trend magazine clocked a Zero to 60 time of 7.5 seconds with a Rebel. There were two Cadillacs that Cunningham took to the 24 Hours in 1950. One was a stock Series 61 coupe that the astounded French dubbed Petit Pataud, which roughly translates to "the Clumsy One." The other car pictured here started out as a bare Series 61 chassis, but was clothed in a riveted aluminum roadster body partially designed by Grumman Aircraft on Long Island, which immediately got it nicknamed Le Monstre. It wasn't exactly a perfect outing. Cunningham was paired with Long Island driver Phil Walters, known during his stellar Midget racing career as Ted Tappett, in Le Monstre, but Cunningham stuffed it into a sandbank on the second lap.
