Actually one of the most interesting things in Cross Purposes is that the number of self-identified evangelicals who attend church "seldom or never" increased from 10% in 2008 to more than a fourth in 2020. Pew Research found in 2021 that there has been no large scale departure from evangelicalism, but other data shows that this is because there was an INFLUX of Trump supporters beginning to identify as evangelical. (p. 58)

Evangelical seems not to be a religious term but a political term. This is a dilemma for the church that I find really puzzling. How can I be accountable for fellow Christians when more than a quarter of this group isn't Christian in any meaningful way? How can we speak to them when they don't go to church? How can we mitigate the harm that they do in our name when they aren't accountable to any faith structure, leader, or community?
