More and more jobs require cross-disciplinary knowledge, so that we find increasing need for hyphenated backgrounds—"Astro-biologist," "bio-physicist," "environmental-engineer," "forensic-accountant." Some tasks require two or more hyphens. Hence, "neuro-psycho-pharmacologist." Soon, it seems clear, we will run out of hyphens. Seemingly permanent disciplines and hierarchies may disappear altogether as knowledge is organized into ad hoc non-hierarchical configurations determined by the problems at hand. At which point the "map of the knowable" becomes a flickering set of constantly changing patterns.

Adaptability isn’t just a skill—it’s the ultimate superpower.
Adaptability isn’t just a skill—it’s the ultimate superpower. As the world evolves, cross-disciplinary thinkers are building the future. Will you?
A Talk, Upcoming
Very happy to say that I will be presenting a talk with John Waldron about our cross-disciplinary work on the Boundary|Time|Surface project next week.
If you are in the Wolfville, Nova Scotia area, the talk is being presented at Acadia University – details in the image above.
Looking forward to sharing this project with students from both Visual Arts and Earth Science!

Referencing architecture's intimate past with the arts, Steven Holl argues the importance of collaborating with other artists for the benefit of the profession alongside choreographer and dancer Jessica Lang. "If we don't intermix the arts and collaborate, we are going to close... The arts are going to fade out individually. We are stronger together."
Watch the Spirit of Space video above to learn more about Holl and Lang's collaboration - Dance with Architecture - that uses dance to explore the four types of architecture: "under the ground, in the ground, on the ground, and over the ground."

Introduction
The Modern Gazetteer is an interdisciplinary research project that was set up in 2011 and is housed across the schools of Architecture and Art and supports and develops collaborative working between Architecture and Art & Design practitioners at all stages of their development. In the spirit of the Gazetteer, projects are responsive to site, and place an emphasis on researching and revealing information in the broadest sense through the engagement of regional community partners, at sites of national and international importance.
The Brief
In cross-disciplinary project teams you will make a proposal for the preservation, and inclusion into the city's collection, of Paradise Circus. Imagination will be needed as it is not going to be possible to preserve the full site. You must negotiate a range of strategies and make an informed, dynamic and impassioned presentation.
The outcome is open ended and is your opportunity to develop your creative capacities beyond conventional studio, but should contribute to the dialogue on art and architectural practice and speculate on the key themes for an installation, due to be delivered in March 2015 at the Museum Collection Centre. Your work can either be considered as 'content' for the installation or act as a 'support structure' for work by others.
The project will operate in three distinct but interrelated phases;
A. October - December 2014: exploration of site & archive(s) with cross-disciplinary dialogue towards production of work for review at end of December.
B. November 2014 - January 2015: cross-disciplinary collaboration through establishment of installation concept and delivery team as part of potentially funded collaborative project. We will be seeking applications for up to 6 students to join this team.
C. January - March 2015: delivery of installation and publication including procurement of (building and publication) material, construction, cur ration of work, marketing and design and editing of publication with mentors.
Design must be an innovative, highly creative, cross-disciplinary tool responsive to the needs of men. It must be more research-oriented, and we must stop defiling the earth itself with poorly-designed objects and structures.
