Castiel walked through the school hallways with his head held high. Whispers and insults met his ears but he didn’t let them settle in his mind. A calmness kept itself burrowed deep in his chest as he kept his feet moving without a second glance at his peers who decided that since he was different he was less than they were. Instead he walked to class with a heavy conviction in each step.
“Faggot!” Someone yelled moments before laughter broke out.
The laughter echoed in the hallways but Castiel didn’t pay it any attention. Instead he was reciting flashcards in his mind for his upcoming quiz. The name-calling was nothing new and as the years passed it became as usual as his first cup of coffee in the morning. No matter if it was right or fair, Castiel decided that he had his life to live and that didn’t entail others opinions of him.
“Castiel!” A friendly voice broke through Cas’ concentrated haze.
He turned his head in time to see one of his best friends, Charlie Bradbury, grinning like a loon by his side. “Hello, Charlie.”
“Hiya. So, you ready for the quiz?” Charlie’s energy made Castiel’s shoulders lose their tension. “’Cause I am totally not prepared.”
Castiel rolled his eyes with a knowing smirk. “You always say that and then you ace the tests.”
“Maybe I am a certifiable genius.”
“Charlie!” A deeper voice called out through the bustling hallway stopping the two of them in their tracks.
They both turned to see Dean Winchester waving his hand at them and trying his hardest to push past clumps of students. Everything in Castiel stopped functioning. There was no secret between Charlie and him that he had been harboring a crush on the wrestling champion since about freshman year. It was complete torture, in Castiel’s mind, that Charlie had to be childhood friends with the sex god.
As soon as Dean made it to the two of them his eyes fell on Castiel’s face. A deep flush erupted across the freckled skin and green eyes widened almost comically. “Oh-hey-uh-Cas. I like the-uh-lip gloss and-uh-eyeliner.”
“Thank you, Dean.” Castiel hoped his voice was level but he knew that it was rising with every stutter of his heart. The make-up was fairly new but the only ones to ever be positive about it were Charlie and his step-father Chuck. It came as a complete shock when Dean’s green eyes never seemed to leave his face.
Silence fell on them as they waited for someone to say something. A couple kids bustled by and knocked into one of them but they stayed stock-still in their little circle. Charlie finally rolled her eyes and raised an eyebrow at Dean. “There a reason you called out my name?”
“Yeah. Right.” Dean grinned nervously with a charm that sent Cas’ heart barreling towards his stomach. “There’s this party tonight but I honestly don’t want to go to it. Superficial people and all that will be there. I’d rather not. So I was wondering if I could maybe hang out with you. You know, in case anyone asks and I have a valid excuse.”
Charlie frowned and sent a look over at Castiel. “Actually, tonight Cas and I were planning on going to the mall. He wants to try on a dr-“
“Charlie.” Cas warned under his breath.
“It’s cool, Cas, Dean’s cool.” But Charlie didn’t continue before looking back at Dean with an apologetic smile. “Unless you would want to come to the mall with us and hang out.”
Dean grinned and nodded quickly before clearing his throat and settling back into his laid-back persona. “Yeah, sure, that’d be awesome. Pick you up at your house?”
“Around four.”
Dean nodded. “Great. See you two then.” Then he was off and all Cas had to look at was the sway of his hips and the back of his head.
“I can not believe you just did that.” Cas seethed where he stood.
“Calm your tits. Dean is one of the good guys. He honestly won’t care if you are going to shop for a dress. Plus he will probably get side tracked in a store and we can sneak away.” Charlie glanced over at Cas with a devious smirk. “Or are you angry that you have to spend time with your crush?”
“Shut up. We’re going to be late.” Cas turned on his heel and started for their classroom with anxiety clouding his head.
Charlie trailed behind him with a knowing smile on her face. Tonight she would make these two bumbling idiots finally see that they were totally and irrevocably infatuated with each other.
`
“I don’t know, Cas, it seems to me like if you wanted to find a nice dress you’d shop at like… hot topic?” Dean frowned deeply before staring off in front of them. “Nevermind. I have absolutely no idea where to go for a dress.”
Castiel was still trying to figure out why Dean was being so nice and casual about this whole thing. In his experience, other than Charlie and his stepfather, people were disgusted when he mentioned the thought of wearing a dress. It struck him enough to remain silent as the three of them roamed the almost empty halls of the mall.
“Let’s try J C Penney?” Charlie added with a shrug. “I don’t really know where to go either.”
Without another comment they made their way toward the department store. Castiel kept his head down to make sure no one could see his flushed cheeks. Under the make-up, and the mindset, he would always be a boy. It wasn’t that he wanted to be a girl… but he wished that people could get their heads out of their asses and be okay with a boy wanting to wear make up and dresses.
Lost in thought he didn’t notice they were in the store until he collided with Dean’s back. “Oh, sorry.”
“It’s cool, Cas.” Dean grinned down at him lightly with a glint of something in his eyes. “So, what color dress you looking for?”
“I… I don’t know yet.” Castiel forced his eyes to glance over the isles of dresses hanging around them. He wanted something simple yet cute. His stepfather tried to tell him that maybe a little black dress would be the best way to go for a first dress but Castiel was always a fan of floral. “What about floral?”
Dean’s face paled a little before he turned and started to aimlessly waltz along the rows of dresses. “Floral is nice.”
“Floral is adorable.” Charlie added with a reassuring smirk. “You know what cut you want over the chest? Sleeve length?”
Castiel shook his head as he furrowed his brow and concentrated on running his fingers along the sleeves of a few dresses. “I think that when I see the right one I will know.”
The three remained quiet as they shuffled among the dresses. Dean pulled out a few to hand to Cas, Charlie did as well. By the end of their first half hour there Castiel had a heavy armful of dresses. On his way toward the changing room he wondered even still why Dean was being so supportive of all this, why the guy was actually helping Cas pick out dresses like it was run of the mill.
The first two dresses Castiel hated. But the third, the third made his smile almost split into his cheeks. The floral print was faded as if the sun had hit it directly, it was strapless with a bow on the chest, and the length went to just above his knee. Not being able to help himself, he twirled in the changing room and let out a small giggle. He felt beautiful. He felt unstoppable. But above all he felt like he fit… like this was the missing puzzle piece to his comfort in his own body.
Changing back into his own clothes only took a few moments. After hanging the unwanted dresses on the rack he couldn’t keep the smile from his face as he found his companions. Charlie squealed with delight when she saw the dress he chose. Dean shifted on his feet with a pleased shy smile.
“Thank you, Dean.” Cas whispered when he realized it was one of the dresses Dean had picked out.
“No problem, Cas. This was fun.” Dean flushed even deeper before reaching around to scratch the back of his neck. “I’m glad I came out with you guys.”
“Me too.” Castiel couldn’t believe how high he was running right now. It was the picture perfect moment that he had wanted since he first saw a picture of a man in a dress and realized that he could do it, that there was nothing stopping him but himself.
“Alright, let’s check out and grab some grub.” Charlie ushered them toward the check-out counter. “Dress shopping makes me hungry.”
After checking out, Castiel beaming as he watched the employee fold the dress and place it in a bag, they found their way to the food court. Dean and Cas both exclaimed they wanted the Chinese while Charlie shouted that she was going to the Mexican place and she’d meet up with them at a table.
Castiel gripped his bag tightly in front of him and swayed lightly. “Thank you again, Dean, for doing all of this.”
“All of what?” Dean raised an eyebrow at him as he stuck his hands into his jean pockets. “This was a lot of fun. You don’t need to thank me like it was a chore for me or something.”
“It’s just… a lot of people wouldn’t have… you know…” Castiel didn’t want to say it and he looked up at Dean with pleading eyes that he hoped he understood.
A light bulb seemed to flick on in Dean’s head. “What? Help a guy pick out a dress? Well, those people are missing out. If you want to wear a dress than you should. The make-up looks really good on you and I bet a dress will be stunning.”
Cas flushed so deeply he was afraid of getting heat stroke. “You really think I look good?”
Something in Dean changed. The shyness disappeared and what was left was a look of raw adoration. “Yeah, I do. I think you are the most beautiful person I’ve ever met. I don’t know why you would doubt that. I came out to help you get a dress because it meant I got to spend time with you. And… I would really like it if maybe you wore that dress on a date… with me.”
“A date?” Cas’ jaw dropped. “With you?”
All at once the nerves shone bright through Dean’s eyes. “Shit. Never mind. I thought you’d want to but I don’t want to be a creep and if you don’t want to then that is fine you’re a cool guy and i-“
Whatever rambling Dean was going to say next was swallowed by Cas’ lips. The two gravitated toward each other, the kiss deepening until Cas could taste Dean in the bottom of his stomach, before someone cleared their throat behind them. They broke apart reluctantly to see the line was moving. Cas let out a soft chuckle before taking a step. A hand found its way into his and it made his smile widen. Their eyes met as Dean lightly traced his thumb along Cas’ palm.
“So, that date?” Dean asked as his swollen lips curled into a smile.
