I had never heard of Wallace Stegner before, but this short, partly autobiographical novel of his (one of his last works, published in 1987) is really an extraordinary account of the life, love, and friendship of two couples and how their lives and relationship evolved from the late 1930s until the death of one of the main characters in the 1970s. Taking place in two states we just visited ((Wisconsin and Vermont) it is a moving, mature, and wise story with many valuable, insightful observations.
