Distinction is in the Detail

A rich chocolate centre sets off this warm orange coating.

There’s no doubting the vivid Orange Façade not only draws upon the history of the Orange Coronation Hall. It gives the entire project a striking and unique appearance. But it’s the mellow tones of chocolate which help the new structure interface with the heritage building it embraces.

Like Auckland’s Art Gallery – this new annex is designed to contrast with the older structure, rather than blend in with it. But in order to feel like a natural extension, the architects wanted to draw cues from the older building in finishing the new.

Not surprisingly the architects chose to add a metal skin to the crowning aspects of the building for a subdued sense of elegance and distinction. And like with the Art Gallery, the architects called on the craftsmanship of Metal Design Solutions to render their designs upon the building.

The top of the structure was clad entirely in Coloured Aluminium, using a horizontal angle seam profile wrapping the façade around the curved contours of the upper floor. And the chocolate colour oozes through the flashings to the alumimium joinery and even the orange panels themselves giving the building a rich and textured look.

So while there is little similarity in the designs of the two structures, this judicious use of metal somehow makes the new building fit seamlessly with the old.
