Fandoms: Welcome to Night Vale, The Dresden Files
Author: shadydave
Length: 222 491 words
Rating: Teen+
Summary: There are a few things that Carlos may have neglected to tell Cecil.
Like his last name.
Or how he hasn’t actually dated anyone since his junior year of high school.
Or that he’s a wizard of the White Council and the regional commander of Wardens in the western United States and not, in fact, a scientist.
You know. Minor details.
Review: I didn’t expect this crossover to work so well, since the two stories have such wildly different tones and Night Vale is so firmly steeped in not explaining the incomprehensible, but it actually works incredibly well.
Carlos is a great leading man and watching his love and protectiveness for Cecil grow is beautiful. Some of his weirder “science is neat” lines from NV canon totally make sense here because he’s not actually a scientist and is faking it like a terrible improv actor. It’s pretty hilarious. And perhaps my favourite bit was seeing Dresden arrive in Night Vale and being totally offput by how chill Cecil is in the face of the utterly morbid and bizarre.
On top of that, the author’s created some truly wonderful OC’s. I particularly loved the lead scientist, a badarse, brutally determined ace woman with a fairly disdainful attitude to the law. She’s actually getting her own sequel that’s in progress at the moment and I would follow this woman’s career anywhere.
