@crow-caller replied to your post “Could you not say qu**r so often, please? Or at least tag it?...”
what defines a term as 'reclaimed' or not? it's still pretty commonly used as a slur in the us outside of cities, and to some degree outside the states. I don't stop people from using it, but it disgusts me, I've had bad experience, and never do I say it or allow myself to be labeled as such.
There is obviously no universal way to say that a slur has been “reclaimed”, but I think it’s safe to say that it has been reclaimed if the biggest LGBT activist groups for the past 2-3 decades (I remember Act Up was mentioned as one of the earliest ones during the AIDS crisis) have been using the term and no one complained.
A slur isn’t reclaimed because it’s no longer used as a slur. By that logic, the N-word hasn’t been reclaimed by black people, and as I said in my original post, literally no word exists to describe non-cis/straight people that isn’t a slur. I mentioned “gay” is used as an insult even towards things unrelated to sexuality. “Homosexual” was originated by psychologists to classify queer people as mentally ill. What else even is there, words like “fag”, “d*ke”, “tr**ny”? These are still primarily slurs, even though they’re also used by fairly large groups, and no one seems to mind their reclaimed status anyway.
The only word that seems to cause waves is the one that happens to be inclusionary, and for ~some reason~, it’s only been debated over the past few months at the same time as ace discourse gained traction.
