Virtual Crowd Commentary Filmmakers have long included crowd responses to action. Think of the blood-lusting crowds in “Ben-Hur” and “Gladiator.” Or the affectionate screams of pre-teens in “A Hard Day’s Night.” What’s new in “Dashcam” is the running commentary of an off-camera crowd. Although viewers will not likely read all the texts, director Rob Savage (@dirrobsavage) invests the effort to make the comments feel authentic, for example, by misspelling words and posting fatuous observations (“youve got red on you”). Five Ways to Shoot Crowd Scenes on a Shoestring Budget Crowd scenes can add realism and energy to a movie—think of the Normandy landing sequence in Spielberg’s “Saving Private Ryan.” Done Hollywood style—hiring extras and/or controlling public spaces—crowd scenes typically are expensive. But with ingenuity, it’s possible to get crowds into low—or no—budget films. The main challenge is not drawing attention to the production—so that people in the crowd won’t look into the camera. The frames here—from the powerful drama “Old Man and Tokyo”—suggest techniques that the director Yasuyuki Kubota used…or might have used. 1. Hide the camera. (This is relatively easy if you’re using a smartphone.) 2. Shoot from a distance. 3. Shoot looking down on the scene. 4. Shoot from behind your actor (for example going up an escalator) 5.
