I am one those yugioh fans who doesn't hate Crow Hogan and htinks he wasn't the rot of the problem since that is the most common proble people have when talking about 5d's production over a decade later since they can't think much beside point fingers. TBH, what is even the reason Crow is so hated?
Before I start: I also like Crow and think he's perfectly fine In Premise.
I think a lot of his issues come from Execution.
But basically?
He basically comes out of nowhere as Yusei's unmentioned Super Best Other Friend with a Super Xtreme Kewl Deck of a named theme (Blackwings) versus Jack and Yusei whose Decks are described as the collected rubbish that flowed down into Satellite.
He manages to easily beat the police, survives an Earthbound Immortal thanks to a fridge, and manages to defeat a Dark Signer despite at that time Not Being A Chosen One Of Destiny (i.e. Signer)
Basically he grates people for being every kid's power fantasy Deviantart Original Character Do Not Steal they make when they're in middle school, put into a professional production.
I think he was basically the result of several things:
A) A desire to push a strong competitive Deck that could displace Emergency Teleport Dark Armed Dragon decks and its ilk and prove to management that Synchro wasn't a mistake.
B) Yusei needed to go back into Satellite and none of his friends were particularly good Duelists and it made sense for him to have someone who could Duel and also bounce off of, dialogue wise. (See why Soulburner exists in VRAINS to compensate for Yusaku being a total loner in Season 1)
C) A cool action hero type to go with Jack, Yusei and Aki as likely reception was cold on Ruka and Rua, and staff were beginning to get cold feet on the whole "Arcadia Movement" dealio.
But.
There's nothing wrong with a Signer unaware of his destiny.
There's nothing wrong with a guy who stayed in Satellite who's managed to slap together a Deck (possibly even stole it)
There's nothing wrong with Yusei having other old friends from before Rally and co.
The problem is none of it is set up early on. I think, had the show been more diegetic about its decision making with regards to Crow, and Crow's prominence did not feel like it was at the cost of Aki and the Twins, he'd be perceived less toxically.
But the general frustration is he feels like a forced character who hijacked the position of established cast members without much in the way of foreshadowing.
Fly off into the sky with Crow, the Bullet, Hogan! He might seem rough and scrappy, but Crow also has a heart of gold that cares for kids, friends, and family. Show this bird of a feather some love!
Updated Version of my Heart&Soul Zine piece. Originally, I had planned to add Joe and Raikiri for the zine piece but since I was assigned the 5D's version of Crow I couldn't add Raikiri. I was told I could keep Joe for the 5D's manga but in the end, I went with Gale and Blizzard instead, since it looked weird to have two synchro and one Main Deck monster. But for today I added the two back in, completing a piece that shows all 3 versions of our favorite Trickster.
Also, you have to ship Markedshipping (Crow x Yusei) after this. I mean, he doesn’t want Crow to die! That is basically him saying he loves him. Right?
If They Showed A Duel Between Crow Hogan & Soulburner (Takeru Homura), Who Do You Think Would Win? #anime #yugioh #vs #yugioh5ds #crowhogan #yugiohvrains #takeruhomura #soulburner https://www.instagram.com/p/BywpNK_DJke/?igshid=1gjc94m3x8iqp
I love squabbleshipping. They are so cute. And there are so less content from them T-T I cheated a little bit with this picture. I drew it once in the December September but I think that would be the perfect picture for that day. Even I’m to late once again ^^°
