Character Questionnaire: Dev Contest

1. What is the spiciest food your character has ever eaten? And did they regret it?

 There was an Indian takeout place down the street from the apartment she lived in with her mom in Brooklyn, and they had this amazing chicken curry that she would only get very rarely because it was so spicy. Saoji Chicken Curry with garlic naan, that was the spiciest food, but she couldn’t get enough of it. Really she saved it as a rare treat just to avoid burning all her tastebuds off. 

2. If you character could time travel, where or rather when, would they travel to?

Not too long ago, really. She would travel to last summer, the last summer she spent in America, so that she could have more time with her boyfriend before it all fell apart. She doesn’t like admitting this; she doesn’t like admitting how much their breakup wrecked her. 

3. What is arguably the weirdest thing your character wishes to do or accomplish before they die?

Finish her nail polish collection. She doesn’t always count herself as one of the more traditionally feminine people in the world, but she has an obsession with nail polish and has boxes upon boxes of them. She wants to fill out the entire color spectrum the best she can. Trust and believe, the no nail polish rule at school is probably one of her least favorite things. 

4. What is one resolution they make every year and never accomplish it?

Literally every year since she was about six, she has had the resolution to travel to a new country. She has never really gone anywhere except America and Italy and now Savoia. She wants to see the whole world, but at this rate, she isn’t doing too good. She always gets caught up in the minutiae of daily life. 

5. What is this year’s resolution?

Get over her boyfriend. Because she really, really isn’t. 

6. What was your character’s best subject in elementary/high school? Worst?

Unsurprisingly, Allie’s best subject, or the one she took to fastest anyway, was art class. From middle school on she took it very seriously and always outranked her classmates in terms of grades in anything art related. She was a well rounded student in terms of grades; her parents were always disappointed that she didn’t want to go to law school or medical school or something “impressive” but it was obvious by the time she was in high school she wasn’t going dedicate enough time to core subjects anyway. The class she probably struggled with the most growing up was PE. She’s not uncoordinated or anything, she just hates the idea of organized gym class where it becomes basically just an excuse for people to show off how hot they are to one another. She isn’t the most gifted athlete and growing up she had to deal with a lot of ridicule in PE class. 

7. Name a conspiracy theory your character believes in and why?

She doesn’t believe in any real conspiracy theories. The closest she could probably get to believing in a conspiracy theory is that some medical discoveries are downplayed to keep Big Pharma in business, but she doesn’t really talk about it a lot because she knows it’s probably nonsense and she doesn’t want to come off like a lunatic.

8. Where do they see themselves in 5 years?

Still in school training to be the next Queen of Italy and hopefully being just as known for her art. She is kind of sad that for the rest of her life her art is probably going to be known not for its quality but because it was made by a royal. But, that said, she’s started adopting an alias whenever she finishes a piece she intends to sell and she’s still seen success that way.

9. Is there someone they miss in their life?

Her friends. She keeps in touch with them, but she hasn’t seen any of them since last summer. They aren’t exactly in the financial position to make an international flight to come visit her, and she would pay to fly them out, but they’ve declined the offer every time. So she still sees them on FaceTime and stuff but she really misses just going and wreaking havoc all night long with them.

10. Does your character have any superstitions? 

It’s not really something she believes strongly but she can be quite superstitious. Throwing salt over her shoulder, not stepping on cracks or walking under ladders, avoiding broken mirrors, she just kind of does them naturally. It’s more that her mother is superstitious and she was raised by her mother entirely so she just adopted them more as mannerisms and quirks than things she actually believes in.

When the Genovia Convention finished and world leaders went home, many eyes turned to the United States.

The tension hung over Congress like a thick fog in what would be one of the final joint meetings of the United States government. What was supposed to be a peaceful discussion to plan the handing over of government power (and choosing a leader) quickly dissolved into accusations of manipulation and corruption. By the end of the three-day conference, the United States as the world knew it would, unofficially, no longer exist. Over the next six months, the negotiations would solidify the decision.

From one to six.

The west coast states (California, Oregon, and Washington), Alaska, and Hawaii unified to become the Western Territories, electing a former Californian senator to become the new leader. Much to no one’s surprise, Texas finally gained the independence they had craved for a century, and a noted political family was elected to become the new royal bloodline. A majority of the central states unified under the guidance of many senators (though the election was the most controversial, with a Minnesota senator eventually winning), while the southern states (following the Mason-Dixie line) also remained together, also choosing a historical political family to take over. The thirteen colonies were left, forming the final territory, making the surprising decision to choose a family with few political ties but a strong private-sector presence.

The months following the division were filled with public outcry and ridicule. Many (including a significant portion who didn’t like the Convention’s decision to institute monarchies across the globe) protested the decision and the transition was far from smooth. Redrawing the borders and the restructuring of citizenship among the new countries took a unified effort from the old and new governments. Even now, with the dust settling, the former United States is far from peace and is just starting on the road to stabilization.
