Material Exploration: Crow Quill Pens & Ink
A Crow Quill pen is a type of dip pen or nib pen. This type of writing tool usually consists of a metal nib mounted in a handle or holder. The handle or holder can be made from a variety of materials including bone, metal, plastic, even glass. Generally, dip pens have only tiny ink reservoirs in the metal nib of the pen, so the artist will need to refill the ink from an ink bowl or bottle to continue drawing. Reinking can be done by dipping into your ink container, but it is also possible to apply ink the pen with an eyedropper or a brush.
Drawing with a crow quill pen can have many advantages to a regular ink pen. You can easily control your ink, changing the type of ink you are using according to the needs of your drawing. Dip pens are very sensitive to variations of pressure and speed, producing a line that naturally varies in thickness and can be very fine for detail work.
Each of you received a container of ink, a crow quill pen holder and 2 nibs on Wednesday. I left sets of materials for folks who were absent on Wednesday (attention Ashley, Maddy, Isaiah and Teresa!) to pick up on the round table in front left corner of the art studio.
Take some time on Monday to explore this fun new tool.
Watch the videos above for some basic information on the materials and basic techniques on using your crow quill dip pen for a different quality of line work.

You can buy a variety of nibs for pens for a variety of effects and they are fairly inexpensive.
Each of you will receive a container of waterproof ink, a crow quill pen holder and 2 nibs. If you like this type of drawing, I would suggest you explore other types of inks, nibs, and holder systems.
