Life Color Post:

1. Tights I found on Pinterest. Recently I’ve been very intrigued by 60’s colored tights, and I thought these were really cool. The color scheme is very interesting, and definitely very retro

2. A red breasted robin I found while walking to the cafeteria. He is so beautiful, and I found him on the same path many more times throughout the week. It was really fun to just watch him, and it was so beautiful how he could have such a vibrant color on him

3.  Another thing that caught my eye on Pinterest. This dress is so gorgeous, and the colors together are so beautiful! I love the rose pink, raspberry pink, blush pink, lavender, and black together!

Questions of the Week:

What art is most challenging for you? Why?

What makes an artwork good or bad?

The hardest art for me to create is realistic portraits and things involving hands and normal human positions. The hardest art for me to consume are things that are so abstract they lose my interest.

As I have shared before, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so an artist shouldn’t make art just to please other people. Most people would agree that the art of a five-year-old constitutes as bad, and maybe it is because it is done very carelessly without skill. Professional artist can make pieces though that look like a five-year-old did it, and yet it constitutes as good. This is a confusing concept, but maybe it is because the artist is doing it intentionally and has a bigger meaning behind it that makes it more complicated. I think usually, good art is when an artist displays skills that the rest of the population does not have, and therefore it is impressive.

Life Color Post!

1. I tried to explore orange this week, and found a few orange flowers that I did truly love. My roommate’s boyfriend bought her a bouquet of these flowers on their date, and she was so excited to show me them when she came back. I asked if I could take a picture of them for my class, and she ended up giving me one which was very sweet. I don’t hate this orange, and it is very vibrant and beautiful. I think the pollen is especially cool because it is a dark orange that stains everything

2. These pink flower bushes are all over campus, in front of my house back home, and all over town. I have been enjoying them a lot, and the pink is like a bubblegum pink. As I was walking to the art studio, I spotted this gorgeous butterfly on the bush, and was lucky enough to get a picture. It has such a fancy design, and the yellow is not pale but also not overwhelmingly bright

3.  These flowers are also planted on campus, and I love the five petal butter cup shape. The colors are really interesting, with the coral, bright red veins, and olive yellow green in the middle. I think they are very happy :)

4. On my quest to find more orange, I spotted these snapdragons planted on campus. It is a very beautiful bright orange, that also has some red and pink in it. I like how it has variation

5. While walking to class, I found this humongous feather! It was so fluffy and huge! The colors are very dark too, and I thought it was cool how a bird could have such a dark black feathers, that transition into gray and then white

My Studio Project: Rosson Crow & Me!

I truly loved working on this piece! I chose to respond to Rosson Crow’s piece, “Belle Isle Conservatory.” I was struck by how the collection of nature was a tribute to God’s artistry and existence, though Crow is not a believer as far as I know. It pointed me to a thought I have often, that nature and creation point to there being a creator. I was inspired by Crow’s plants and color scheme, and created a room with various potted plants, retro wood paneling, a glitching television, and bright flooring. The lovely Anna made my piece even better by pointing out how the television is made by man, and the plants are made by God, and how the TV being so distracting in this piece is a perfect example for how we are distracted by other things and not God’s craftsmanship.

I have always had a love hate relationship with orange, and so for my “choose your own” week, I decided to explore the ways I like orange. It has actually been really eye-opening for me :)

Life Color Post

1. Here is a little basket of candy from Jessup’s front office where I work. I really like the bright colors together, and I love the look of assorted candies. I’m also always a sucker for blue gingham

2. Here is an example of a color combination that drives me crazy. This pattern is all over the front office, and I can’t understand why they would choose it. They might be redeemable colors in certain contexts, but all together it is very unappealing to me.

3. I’m still in love with our foliage pile from Wednesday! The rich green next to all the warm colors of the flowers is so beautiful! It was like a dream come true!

4. Here is my little baby fern, whose name is “Jazz Hands” (on account of how he dances when you bob him). I got all excited because I saw a little sprouts were forming, and it’s so cute how they start as little spirals. The green is so fresh here, next to the rich soil. I wouldn’t usually say I love brown, but this brown is very beautiful!

Questions of the week

What types of art are you most drawn to? Why?

How would you describe your aesthetic?

I really love art that focuses on color, or invoke emotion. I am usually drawn to more traditional art than modern or contemporary. I especially love pieces of nature, or scenes that feel like you could walk into the painting.

My own aesthetic usually focuses a lot on color palettes I like, flowers and plants, and tiny details. I like creating art that feels very soft and sweet.

I really love black, and wear it all the time, so this will be fun! I enjoy black for how it can be glamorous, comfortable, and edgy ;)

Organizing by Color!

I remember my mom always organizing her closet by color, and I thought she was crazy and couldn’t imagine how she ever found anything. I’ve always had a very specific formula for how I organize my closet, and compile articles together in groups of category versus color. I was curious though and wanted to try it for this activity, and I absolutely love it! It will take some time for me to get used to, but I’m seeing my clothes in a new way, and it looks so pretty visually!

1. My family and I took a walk at Folsom Lake over the weekend, and it was so wonderful! My mom kept picking little wildflowers and made a little bouquet. We were amazed at the different colors that just naturally grew, and how beautiful they are together!

2. The main reason we went to Folsom Lake is that I've heard about fields of lupines growing in April, and I wanted to see if we could find them. They were so worth it! One of my new favorite flowers, they are gorgeous and the deep blues are incredible!

3. We spent Easter at my grandparents house this year and it was such a blessing. The last few times I've visited I've taken pictures of little nick-naks and things that are special to me around their house (which has barely changed since I was born). These strawberry plates are so super special and nostalgic to me. The colors aren't too incredible, but I like the earthy, calm tones of the ivy green next to the saturated red.

4. While painting my "Colors in Nature" activity, I realized I have been overlooking two yellow watercolors I have. I've only ever used them for yellow green, but I realized they make a beautiful golden yellow, and I am quite happy.

Question of the week:

What makes art successful?

Art is successful to the artist if it becomes what they hoped it would be. Art is successful to the public if they like it and it aquires fame. It all depends on the goal of the artist. Accomplishing something you're proud of is success in my book!

1. I found this feather while walking to class. I liked the gray, and how classic it looks, almost like it was dipped in some paint. It brightened my day

2. I always notice these flowers outside my work. Today their pink petals were brighter than usual. I think the pink and the green are a beautiful contrast

3. I took out my gauche palette from my art bag one day to find everything had chipped off and left a giant mess in my bag. I kinda liked the little chips though. I gluesticked a piece of paper, and poured the paint chips on to make this little mosaic, and I love the collection of blues it created

4. I came home today to see these beautiful pink Easter tulips my mom bought and put in our kitchen. The pink is bright, but not too bright, and I really like that. The dark green is a nice contrast

Is art defined by particular boundaries? If so, what are they? How have they changed over time?

What are the subjects, issues and themes important to artists working today?

Art has to be a creative expression in some way. An artist has very little boundaries of what they’re art can be when it comes to contemporary art. Art will be more recognizable when it follows the traditional boundaries of color and traditional materials.

Artists today make pieces that talk about social justice issues, mental health, history, and sometimes political issues. There is a lot of themes of questioning reality and making their audience think differently.

Color Research: Personal Color Preferences 

My favorites (mostly pastels and jewel tones) are on the left, and my least favorites (mostly Bright's, neon, and muddy colors) are on the right. This was so fun, and gave me an excuse to try out our new paints! Mixing the colors created some pretty ones (like the lavender and pastel orange), but mostly made some gross beiges😂 This was super fun! I also added some of my favorite color combos on here...

Small Group Feedback Session

In my breakout room with Jewel, Anna, and Isabella, we each shared a little about our artist, the meanings behind their work, and what we were then thinking of doing in order to respond to them. Jewel is thinking of making a macrame weaving with many colors, Isabella is thinking of creating a Pongee robe that combines multiple cultures, and Anna is thinking of using watercolor paint to create multiple houses and symbolize the places that she has lived. I am thinking of doing a gouache painting with many bright colors, plants, and small, layered details to respond to my artist Rosson Crow. We are all using very different materials, and we were able to give each other some ideas and feedback materials wise. I felt I was able to both give and receive good feedback, and I’m excited to start now!
