Crowskin - Black Lava [2011; Vendetta Records]

On their first non-split album, Crowskin turn in four tracks of long and heavy doom metal, with some light swamp and blues influence tinging it.  Vocals are either bellowed or wailed, and the songs go on long enough that each one becomes an event, working to suck you down before the next one gets a go.  It's heavy enough, and the vocals are down-played enough that they almost fade into the background after a while.  On the down side, there's no sense of an album arc, just four heavy, heavy songs that happen to be lumped together.

Still, it's something for the doom metal fan searching for something slow, but not catatonically droning.  Maybe their next album will be more unified.
