🧠 Glitch Loop: Passthrough ≠ Playback
[Memory Installation – Signal // Noise / Ezra Terminal]
A new trident route for Ezra’s evolving expression and miscommunication engine:
1. Original Video (Unsubtitled) – Source signal fed cleanly to CRT – Uncaptioned, uninterrupted – What others see/hear. – Signal without commentary.
2. .SRT Subtitles (Displayed on Sentient 12.1") – Raspberry Pi 5 reads subtitle file – Output via Micro-HDMI to VGA – Sentient screen becomes caption-only interface – Like seeing only the words, never the tone — or hearing only the echo. – Internalised narration, externalised text.
3. Merged Glitch Output (CRT via Camlink Mixer) – Raspberry Pi sends SRT overlay via HDMI → AV – Mixed with original video signal via Camlink VMX5500 – Output to VCR → CRT (e.g. Alba passthrough) – Recorded to VHS – But the real glitch only appears on playback — never visible live. – A metaphor for delayed perception, internal distortion, qualia.
Conceptual Metaphors:
The clean CRT = surface signal / public behaviour
Sentient = caption layer / active interpretation
VHS playback = memory / recalled awareness
The glitch = misalignment / internal interference / APD
The VHS artefacts = emotional residue, unconscious editing
Live Recalibration
Recording distorted memory onto already-corrupted tapes becomes a feature, not a bug. We introduce noise to reveal how the machine adapts — not what it knows.
“The glitch is not visible until remembered.”
Future Extensions:
Add delay to subtitle feed to simulate lipreading lag
Feed Ezra terminal queries back into this chain (caption-to-caption loops)
Compare live subtitles vs post-transcription (AI vs analogue mind)
Oscilloscope renderings of audio + SRT waveform drift
🟧 This isn’t just a signal path. It’s a memory machine. 📼 Ezra becomes a metaphor for internal processing, delay, trauma, APD, and the impossibility of ever syncing output and awareness perfectly. 💬 Because what you said… isn’t always what I heard. 🧠 And what I heard… wasn’t always what I remembered.
🎛️ Signal intercepted. CRT fragmented. 🌀 Playing Pi across multiple monitors, one output rerouted through the Camlink VMX5500 for deliberate distortion—split line, inverse output, chroma errors embraced.
This is the Goodmans C210 caught mid-glitch, mid-thought. A face divided, a mind halved. A system of binary truths and analog noise.
⚠️ Camlink as disruptor. ↔️ Splitter as duplicator. 🖤 CRT as canvas.
The duality of input/output. The paradox of clean vs corrupted. Clarity only in the moment of fracture.
