Tardigrade-inspired. Hardy, alien, a survivor-of-void — not “cute”, not characterful. More like a sealed specimen that happens to be soft.

Working notes:

the mouth aperture stays as a recessed ring — an opening that doesn’t explain itself.

seam logic does the heavy lifting: plates, joins, tension points.

close-ups matter: if it reads “manufactured” at macro scale, the fiction holds.

We can map a cubic millimetre of brain in petabytes and still not locate consciousness. Yet we’re shipping agents into the world anyway. The

There’s a peculiar asymmetry emerging.

We can now map fragments of the human brain in petabytes — trace synapses, reconstruct pathways, simulate structure — and still not explain the presence that moves through it.

At the same time, we’re deploying artificial agents into the world. Systems that act, decide, persuade, optimise. Systems that behave like minds, while built atop architectures we only partially understand, pursuing goals defined by incentives we barely examine.

The black box has stopped being a passive instrument. It has become a participant.

This isn’t a technical problem. It’s an ontological one.

Science can describe behaviour. It can map structure. It can measure correlation. But the relationship between structure and experience — between computation and presence — remains unresolved.

The deeper we look, the sharper the boundary becomes.

The ontology gap isn’t shrinking. It’s becoming measurable.

New machine font release → SIGNAUX REG.

Unlike the other machine fonts in the archive (digitised from physical devices), this one is constructed — built directly from ASCII blocks and modular fragments. Letters emerge as signal traces: half-coded, grid-bound, fractured into noise.

Includes A–Z, numerals, punctuation, and symbols.

SIGNAUX REG is both legible and unstable — somewhere between machine-readable and machine-broken. Another typeface for future process zines, where signal collapses into pattern and language becomes architecture.

🌀 Sound as Vision | Perception as Performance

We’ve long been fascinated by the blur between audio and visual — how signal and perception tangle, differ, and distort from one person to the next.

This piece by Pauric Freeman (@pfree05), a Dublin-based media artist working with TouchDesigner + Eurorack, mirrors many of the themes we explore in Process Zine and signal // noise — glitch, limbo, input overload, and human perception.

Watch how signal becomes texture, how movement becomes sound. It’s not just output, it’s a feedback loop. Freeman calls it “Stretch.” We’d call it a perceptual flex.

🖤 Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989)

“When the body rejects silence, the machine takes over.”

Flesh fuses with metal. Language breaks down. Sound becomes weapon.

Tsukamoto said the film is about “the process in which human beings become Iron.” Not transformation, but condition. Not metaphor, but mutation.

Watching Tetsuo is like getting tinnitus from inside the machine. Every signal is screaming. Every frame is a seizure. This isn’t a film — it’s an interference pattern. The song of silence, distorted beyond recognition.

signal // NOISE — cassette test run (x20)

Delivery this morning: the first physical batch of signal // NOISE cassettes arrived — and they feel like the album finally has a body.

Black/white sandwich shells: Side A = white (signal) / Side B = black (noise). Same tape, two readings. Flip it and the system reconfigures.

What I love about this run is how the concept isn’t printed on afterwards — it’s baked into the object language:

On-body printing (terminal typography, dashed boxes, tiny system labels)

“DIGITAL LEFT << / ANALOGUE RIGHT >>” mapped onto the cassette itself

Track titles as data artifacts (0x… strings, misreads, caption faults, drift notes)

A blunt strapline hiding in plain sight: Input ≠ Comprehension

A typed “ABOUT THIS ALBUM” insert that finally says the quiet part out loud: visual-first listening, one ear gone digital (CI), one ear staying analogue (HA), captions arriving late — AI + field recordings used as prosthetics, not replacements.

And yeah — the J-card still carries that little contradiction I’m fond of: “// analogue only / no digital release” …while the inside quietly lists a digital appendix (bonus tracks + signal scrolls). A format arguing with itself. On brand.
