emilio pucci resort 2011
(images via style)
so the house of emilio pucci, under creative director peter dundas, is still thoroughly vested in the seventies, in making its girls look like a mix of the kate hudson we know of today & the character she played in "almost famous". which is probably fine by the house, as homegirl has been sporting their designs lately, anyway.
having recently received some gentle criticism? should i even call it that? for abandoning the requisite, historical bright prints, it has gone back to that a little, giving us a splashier season that all that thick-aired sex-scented stuff we've been getting the past few, although here it fees appropriate, with julie christie, jane birkin, and the lately ridiculously popular bianca jagger as muses.
and, although there were still a couple of crotch-grazing dresses, this was certainly a more bohemian, easy interpretation of the label than we've seen, if similar to the heart of a lot else on offer for early next year.
it was nice to see that bit of a shakeup. he was able to both access the archives in an appropriate manner, keep in tune with where the cool kids are heading, and give us something a little more sedate than what we were offered for fall.
after all, even kate hudson's in a stable relationship and not madly scouring for another dude at the moment. she needs off-duty clothes. and so do we, occasionally, want our labias covered. it was a nice effort.
3.1 phillip lim resort 2011
(images via style)
phillip lim's 2011 resort show was inspired by the seventies-era bianca jagger, (chanel referenced mick from the same time period, meaning that we're probably going to see a lot of those faded, reprinted rolling stones t-shirts coming out in the next year & one of those always weird revivals in which a bunch of kids suddenly decided they're cool, as if for the first time) and when he was designing it, he asked himself both whether she would wear the pieces and whether regular girls of today would.
frankly, how the clothes will fit into the customer's everyday life is a difficult question. while the pieces undoubtedly have charm and work for casual affairs, it's a little more difficult to imagine some of the day looks transitioning to work. yes, seventies themes and styles are coming back, but to see such blatant references at this point still feels more costumey than realistic.
in the past few seasons, it has felt some designers have largely lost touch with what, like, "regular" women are doing these days, women who don't spend most of their time chillin' in saint-tropez or galloping about a stage in flashy pantsless splendor. maybe that grabs attention, and maybe it sells to some, but for those looking for something reasonable, it gives fewer options & the trickle-down effect is weird. stop teaching girls that sweat jumpsuits are office-okay.
as i've been having some difficulty lately with my 'insert image' button on text posts & tumblr appears to be doing little about it, i've decided to start posting on another blog, which may be seen at: oneporktaco.blogspot.com. i'll continue to add links to my reviews on that site here, while we wait to see whether they fix the problem.
