+ crush+lab is thrilled to announce the forthcoming release of @Large - Creators at Work, presented by Diplo - an original series produced for Red Bull Media House

+we spent a year following visionary artists around the globe, documenting the creative process, philosophy, development and execution of a new and groundbreaking project from each.

+the series introduces and exposes the audience to both emerging, established, and celebrated artists of many disciplines, who find ways to creatively take their art outside of the gallery world, and bring it to public spaces.

+as we followed each of these brilliant creators at work, we were taken on an intimate and profoundly impactful journey, each carrying a unique message that we believe is of paramount importance to share with the world - we are honored to be part of this dynamic and vital dialogue between artist and viewer.

+ each episode juxtaposes 2 artists, revealing how each harnesses the inspirational       power of their individual crafts to engage with the public. This transformation of art into positive energy aligns perfectly with the core values we hold here at crush+lab.

+we would like to applaud the forward-thinking and passionate team at Red Bull Media House for being bold enough to embrace and nurture a project of this nature, making it possible for this kind of material to reach an audience well beyond the established confines of the art world.

Starting this Wednesday in Los Angeles, Roar, the terrifying yet intriguing 80s film, will have a limited theatrical release. Partnered with Olive Films, Drafthouse Films has decided to finally screen and reveal to America the film known to be the most dangerous movie ever made.

Roar features director Noel Marshall and his then wife Tippi Hedren, their real children and over a hundred wild, untamed “big cats.” The plotline centers on Hank (played by Marshall) living peacefully alongside 100+ wild big cats, until his family visits. Then things get ugly.

The inspiration for the movie first hit Marshall and Hedren during their touring of the safari preserves. Shocked by the overhunting of lions, tigers and jaguars, they wanted to raise awareness of the cruel captivity and treatment of wild big cats. They then literally adopted, bred and raised countless lions for the shooting of the film.

The movie was shot and produced over the course of 11 years with a $17 million budget, but it unfortunately only made around $2 million worldwide.

According to the trailer, “no animals were harmed in the making of this film. 70 members of the cast and crew were.” While no cast member was injured to the point of dying, a few were dangerously close. The initial release in 1981 was described by Variety as “the most disaster-plagued film in the history of Hollywood.” It’s fair to argue that no other movie in the history of film has had this level of high risk and danger. 

Though the production of the movie was a physical and financial disaster for Noel Marshall and his family, the movie itself is described by many as one of the most epic and meaningful animal thrillers out there. As Tim League, the founder of Drafthouse Films, states, “you’ve never seen a movie like Roar and there will never, ever be a movie like Roar again.”

Roar will be screened at The Cinefamily and ArcLight Cinemas in Los Angeles. Needless to say, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to watch an epic classic on the big screen featuring dangerous and risky elements that will probably never be seen again in the film world.

Yohji Yamamoto

Yohji Yamamoto, Japanese fashion designer based in Tokyo and Paris, has long been an inspiration for crush+lab.

Setting off with an “anti” position state of mind, a counter-fashion approach to extravagance and the ambition to re-define borders, Yamamoto has, in the last 40 years, introduced and popularized his definition of feminine beauty and sexual appeal. His philosophy and artistic principle are largely based on mixing genders, circulating air between the garment and the body, asymmetry, the color black, and last but not least, utilizing living material.

Yamamoto’s embodiment of simplistic aesthetics, sensual body and breaking existing boundaries parallels crush+lab’s creative vision. At crush+lab, we believe that art comes from challenging the system and embracing the freedom in spirit. Where there is resistance to conform, there is innovation.

 Yamamoto’s new collection for fall 2015, as he described as “under construction,” once again impressed the fashion world with asymmetrical aesthetics and dark silhouettes. Incorporating Greek and Oriental elements, Yamamoto’s fall collection features large, single-piece fabrics shaped into various outfits. Black comprises most of the collection, as usual, but a few deep color shades were used too. And, like always, many outfits are gender-neutral with free and loose fittings. Inspired by under-construction buildings in the city, Yamamoto’s collection elegantly and powerfully expresses the state of imperfection.
