A moment from “Don’t Ask If I’m Okay,” coming May 16, 2023, from Page Street Publishing.  ~ “Oh my gosh.” She laughs and leans back, arms still around my waist. “What’s the catch?”   

“The catch?”  

 “Yeah.” She tips her head up, studying me. “You’re a nice, fun guy who likes to cook— what’s the catch?”   

The compliments should make me feel ten feet taller, but out of nowhere I feel suddenly, coldly, like a fraud. A breath leaves my chest and I hope it sounds like a laugh. Fear and nerves claw up my head. I clamp down on a burst of hysterical laughter.    

 I can’t ride in cars.  

 If you say my dead cousin’s name I’ll start crying. Or screaming. Or punch someone.    

The catch?  

 I’m broken.
