My take in current Snezhnaya politics.
Hi everyone!
This post is more of my perspective, based on the voices of Nod-krai NPCs and other lore sources, such as Flins' own lore and recently released weapons, to explain and dissect the current political situation in Snezhnaya.
Of course, since I'm doing this on my fanfic blog, there are speculations and headcanons based on my own personal interpretation so far as well.
English is not my native language, so I apologize for any errors or similar.
As we well know, Snezhnaya is one of the Genshin regions based on Russian and Slavic culture, with a touch of Italian and similar influences. Unlike other nations, but very similar to Fontaine and Inazuma in some respects, Snezhnaya seems to have—historically—a strong connection to its real-life counterpart, particularly the fall of the aristocracy and the rise of the Soviet Union.
We know this based on specific characters and events, such as the existence of Rauthvangi, the Mad Monk, for example. He was a historical figure in the former government of the Tsar, the sovereign's favorite and the one who encouraged him to continue his revolt against the old order, aka, the Heavenly Principles.
Why are we talking about him specifically? Because he has many historical similarities with Rasputin, a Russian mystic and historical figure known for having become close to the Romanov family and gained great political influence at the end of the Russian Empire.
However, how is this aspect rewritten in Genshin? Through the Fae as the former aristocracy of the Belyi Tsar's government and the post-Cataclysm exchange of archons. When the Tsaritsa, current Cryo Archon, assumed the position of ruler of the nation, a new political regime was established.
Well, to begin with, we can divide Snezhnaya's politics into two periods: Belyi Tsar Era and the Tsaritsa Era. It's worth noting that the nation's politics in both eras changed and varied based on the little we know about the personality differences of the two Archons, especially the Tsaritsa.
Belyi Tsar Era:
Frankly, we can unravel that the Belyi Tsar regime was the old Russian monarchy, with the prevalence of the privilege of the old Aristocrats, where the Fae were the only race that could assume high positions in the government and hold great influence over the nation affairs.
Based on speculation and even some of Flins' statements, Snezhnaya at that time appeared to be a more rural and less technological country, with a large difference in classes and, maybe, even social castes.
However, at the same time, I believe that the White Emperor would begin to accept and make possible means to embrace some humans in his governance. Just like in real empires, adding lower classes to high positions of power was not something that happened overnight, but was a slow and time-consuming process, where even the initial visions of how this increase was done changed from government to government.
The point is, from the way I see it, there was a clear difference in class views: with the Fae considered a privileged and superior species to humans living a life of great abundance; while, among humans, there seemed to be this differences as well, with very few occupying the spaces of the Snezhnayan gentry.
However, things seemed to change with the death of Belyi Tsar, which seems to have fallen during the Cataclysm - coincidentally the same event responsible for a drastic change in the Tsaritsa's personality, who already seemed to be well known not only in the social circle of the ancient aristocracy, but among the Seven Archons themselves, considering her former friendship with Barbatos. Something similar to Raiden Ei and Raiden Makoto, where Ei participated in the meetings of the Seven as her sister's kagemusha.
This will be largely speculation and headcanon on my part, a guess without much solid historical basis; however, based on the little we know, I firmly believe so far that the Tsaritsa is none other than the daughter of Tsar Belyi.
Considering the information that Tsar Belyi was the first to hatch the plan against the Heavenly Principles and that the objective of burning the old world did not come directly from the second monarch, I believe that, after her father's death during the Cataclysm and the invasion of abyssal monsters in Snezhnaya, overcomed by grief, she assumed the throne and her father's desire to take revenge and overthrow the old order.
Another slightly interesting detail is that this dream of the Tsaritsa and even Belyi Tsar, stretching a lot, could be considered their desire to establish a world free from the inequalities and misery caused by the usurpers, with Snezhnaya as the Tsaritsa "testing ground" for establishing the new ordo.
Another important thing that I will not expand on in this thread, but I think it is necessary to talk about: I am very skeptical of the theory that the Tsaritsa was the wife of the third descender or that she wants to bring him back by collecting the Gnoses. This is mainly due to chronological inconsistencies and because I think this theory falls into the same category as "Kusanali being a false archon" or "having two factions in Fontaine + a revolution against the Hydro Archon" kinda theory.
Tsaritsa Era:
Thus, based on what we already have about Belyi Tsar, the Tsaritsa, and some historical aspects of Snezhnaya, we can begin to discuss the likely and many notable changes in the region during her reign.
In short: the Tsaritsa established the Soviet Union in Snezhnaya.
Of course, it's not the same as the Soviet Union, as we still have a monarchy and a sovereign. However, there are many historical aspects shared between the new regime and the adoption of the Socialist model in Russia in the 20th century.
As with the former rural country, both nations began a strong and heavy industrialization process once the new political-economic system was established.
As Flins himself says (shown previously) and based on many other sources scattered throughout the game at various different points, Snezhnaya became the second largest power in Teyvat right after Liyue. Having the greatest military might and enormous economic influence not only within itself but also across all other nations on the continent, sharing many similarities with the USSR.
The most drastic and striking difference? The loss of Fae influence based on the ideals of Her Majesty, the Tsaritsa.
Based on the statements of countless characters and artifacts, the Tsaritsa is described as a gentle, benevolent, and merciful goddess who sees no distinction between any of the races occupying Snezhnaya. To her, all those in the Motherland and that trust in her are worthy of her love and respect, regardless of birth or similar circumstances.
Because of this, one of the most drastic changes in the Snezhnayan empire was the dissolution of aristocratic titles by blood, or in this case, by being a Fae. Anyone, as long as they were worthy of merit and abilities, could occupy positions that previously, under the government of Belyi Tsar, were unthinkable.
The best proof of this? The Fatui Harbingers themselves, who hold high-ranking positions and influence in Snezhnaya's internal politics, but which are still composed of members from other nations. Such as Pantalone himself, who manages Snezhnaya's internal economic policies, even though he is—most likely—from Liyue.
However, of course, unlike the former Russian Empire, where much of the aristocracy was hunted down, in Snezhnaya, the Fae remained in positions of power and continued to influence the nation in certain ways not yet widely discussed. They just didn't have the former glory and all the privileges previously conceived during the Tsar's reign.
When a popular regime grants more guarantees and opportunities to the lower classes, it consequently results in the withdrawal of privileges from the upper classes.
"Is Snezhnaya currently a socialist paradise?" lol
No, I believe it's still far from that.
Despite the sudden changes in government and the new access granted to ordinary and less fortunate people, there are still clear political and social problems in Snezhnaya that, even after 500 years, can still be seen today.
And if I were to say so, this is due to the Fatui.
There is a great duality between the political-military organization and its founder. Although changed by the cataclysm, and being no longer the charismatic princess she might have been during the Tsar's reign, the Tsaritsa remained benevolent and merciful; by, for example, allowing Nod-Krai to become an independent region and pardoning Peruere for killing a Harbinger.
Tsaritsa is merciful, but her faction is not. In the Fatui, due to the various Harbingers and the Tsaritsa's own will—allowing them to follow their own paths and disobey her orders when the time comes—there is a constant use of abusive, violent, and questionable methods within the organization.
The Fatui aren't necessarily villains, but they're not exactly a pretty sight. With Tartaglia, for example, considering them one of the dark sides of Snezhnaya and also having original Snezhnaya NPCs who openly despise the Fatui's modus operandi.
Therefore, just as in the former Soviet Union, where there was a large corruption scheme and the formation of bureaucrats who came to occupy the former aristocratic position, I believe it was the same for the Fatui and a portion of its members and officers.
My current hypothesis is: In Snezhnaya, there is a corrupt bureaucratic second command of the Fatui operating under the Tsaritsa's watch, with perhaps even some of the Harbingers involved. By using the Tsaritsa's distorted words, they gain advantages and benefit for themselves.
Maybe Pulcinella, if he's a Fae, is one of their members and wants to reinstate the old regime of Belyi Tsar, who knows? loll
Now, whether this hypothesis is correct or if the Tsaritsa knows about it? Only time will tell.
Before I forget! The hypotheses of an internal resistance.
This is largely speculation on my part, mostly based on Diluc's character history and his involvement with the Fatui, as well as a few tidbits that have recently surfaced in Nod-Krai.
For those who don't know, or don't remember, Diluc is considered persona non grata and infamous among the Fatui for directly intervening against several of their schemes, which nearly led to his death.
The point is, he was saved from a trap that nearly took his life thanks to a third observer from the north who approved of his methods against the Fatui. Soon after, it is mentioned in the same story—Diluc's Character History 3—that he joined an apparent underground intelligence network.
Furthermore, according to one of the Nod-Krai NPCs, Golitsyna, Snezhnaya is also apparently, and curiously, known for their intelligence agencies unrelated to the Fatui.
Hence a tiny hypothesis, a tiny "what if": Could it be that, within the borders of Snezhnaya and scattered throughout the territory's underground, there's a possible resistance group opposing the new government and methods adopted by the Fatui and their sovereign, the Tsaritsa? However, not only with members from Snezhnaya, but from all the nations of Teyvat who oppose their political influence?
Well, it's just speculation on my part, but I think it's an interesting concept!
That's it, folks! Those were my thoughts on the current political situation in Snezhnaya.
Of course, I didn't say everything, and I may have skipped a lot of my thoughts, especially since this wasn't a particularly elaborate thread.
But anyway, I just thought it would be interesting to share these hypotheses I have with you, lol

Finally, it's only been a year! A battle like that, with all its chthonic inevitability, really gets the tension going, doesn't it?)
/To be honest, mimicking a manga style is no easy task, but still, the result turned out pretty damn good! Decent enough~ +1 drawing to the "long-suffering works" collection 🥰
