I just fucking realized something insane. So, my belated Cas day fic is an amalgamation of some Destiel things that have been on my mind lately. Particularly the crypt scene. So I was going through a transcript of "Goodbye, Stranger" (08x17), and I came across the part where Sam and Meg are outside of the warehouse, blissfully unaware that a recently lobotomized/brainwashed Cas is beating Dean to Hell on the inside. And so, Sam tells her about Amelia in one of the cutscenes, and Meg refers to Amelia as Sam's "unicorn". So that's all the backstory from the episode we need.
Here are some important screenshots:
So, we see Meg "kind of gets it", but at this point, it's not clear what she means.
Here, we see, maybe she could've been referring to the fact that she feels the way Sam felt about Amelia about Cas. BUT. That doesn't explain completely what she means when she says she "gets it". She's not talking about falling in love. She's talking about Sam's story. She "gets" some part of Sam's story or, some of his motivations for doing the things he did (ie, he left Amelia and Don to figure out their relationship when Don came back).
So, right off the bat, this is an obvious parallel between Sam/Amelia and Cas/Meg. But what is the parallel? Could it perhaps have something to do with the fact that Amelia was wavering in her feelings toward Sam because her presumed-to-be-dead husband returned? No, of course not, it's not like anyone had appeared back in Castiel's life, pulling him away from Meg or anything like that. Absolutely no one.
Oops, I don't know where that came from. Huh, now that I think about it, Dean did pull Cas away from Daphne, landing him in the mental hospital Sam had been staying in, and then subsequently came back and pulled him away from Meg. But, I'm sure that has nothing to do with this writing parallel made between Sam/Amelia and Meg/Cas.
Although, hypothetically, Sam leaving Amelia so that she could figure out her relationship with Don does, hypothetically, also work in this hypothetical parallel, because Meg clearly steps back from Cas when Dean returns. You know, hypothetically.
Now, if you take into account why she might've used the word unicorn, specifically, it might be helpful to look at what unicorns typically symbolize/are associated with. Most lore on unicorns states that unicorns are elusive creatures who are typically only seen by those they deem pure of heart/worthy of their presence.
So, if you think about this in Sam/Amelia's context, it could mean that the writers were trying to convey that Sam was less worthy of Amelia's love than her husband. Hmmm. Does this mean Cas values his connection with Dean over his connection with Meg? And that Meg knows this? Hmmm.
I don't know if I'm explaining my thoughts right in this post. If it's just early AM brain, please ignore it. And before anyone says the unicorn symbolism is a stretch, it very well might be, BUT. The fact that Meg compares her situation with Cas to Sam's situation with Amelia should be parallel enough !!!
