hi! your cryptic reading are fascinating and i was wondering if you could explain the process of creating them?
I have two decks that I use for these readings currently: my rider-waite, and the Animal Spirit oracle deck (hence animals often making an experience). Typically, I draw two or three tarot cards, and one oracle card, but it can be all oracle cards, or all tarot, or many of both! I use the shuffling and drawing of the cards as a quick sort of meditation, I guess? I focus on the direction I’ve been given (and if they’re off anon, I also try to get a feeling for what energy they’re bringing to the reading) and clear my mind of the kind of thing I might want to say.
Sometimes the message is clear immediately based on the meanings of the cards (I don’t, however, ever let myself look at the guidebooks for these readings. So what you’re getting from me is often a lot of intuitive leaps), other times recurring symbols stand out to me (if there’s a river in all the cards I drew, that’ll go into the message), or if the cards seem to be interacting I make sure that the reading acknowledges that (characters are facing each other, or very pointedly not facing each other). I typically spend a solid couple of minutes just staring at the cards and noticing these details and how they might play into the meanings of the cards and the overall message.
The fun part is taking all of this nuance and translating it into something vaguely poetic and interesting to read. Usually, this isn’t too hard because I have a good feel for what needs to be said and I genuinely enjoy conveying this in the way I do. Sometimes I barely have to think about what needs to be said because it’s like something is telling me exactly what I need to write and gods help me if I don’t write exactly that. Basically, it involves a lot of me reading very weird sentences out loud to myself. If it makes me feel a little uneasy, then we’re good to go.
So let’s say I drew Ten of Pentacles, Eight of Cups, and the Wolf. I’m going to say “Okay, well it looks to me like we’re at ease, doing really well for ourselves, surrounded by family, but we’re leaving this behind for some reason! The Wolf is kind of protector figure, so I think we’re probably leaving because it’s what’s best for someone else. The ten of pentacles is a really busy and full card, but we’re moving into the eight if cups, which is very sparse.”
A bit of thinking and meditation later, and we have...
“I am hungry for your joy: I have feasted and rejoiced, held the rotten flesh of your happiness between my teeth and called it my own (I am a scavenger, picking over your remains for every morsel you have to give). To turn my back is adoration, and not malice (never malice, not towards you.)”
