Introducing the leader of the Big Bad group, aka the Arbiters of Doom, the Arbiter of Despair💥 he is Lyra’s opposite and her greatest foe. I actually love this design I think it looks really cool, I can’t wait to see it in our comic wayyyy in the future! We really struggled to find what the opposite of ‘Spirit’ would be, and in the end we decided that it would mean to have ‘spirit’ or have ‘heart’, which meant that the opposite was to despair.
Despair has some yellow in his design to mimic Lyra’s, however the sickly lime green added to it makes it feel evil and corrupted. After all many classic Disney villains loved their evil shade of lime green. The use of a lot of eyes, large and small in all of the Arbiter’s designs mimics designs of biblically accurate angels, so it creates a feeling of reverence laced with fear, and the skull & horns of course are a classic evil motif.
