Oh my goodness! What a weekend! Yesterday was a GREAT DAY at the 1st annual Mermaids and Margaritas Festival in Crystal River FL! Hosted by the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce! Hands down the BEST event that I’ve ever attended/participated with in my 28 years of living and breathing in Citrus County. I would like to personally take a moment to thank all of the mermaids and mermen who assisted during the event, all of the volunteers, friends, and family who personally assisted Mertailor in making things happen the day of and everyday up to the event! A special thanks to the Citrus County Sheriff’s office for providing security the night before the event, the Citrus County Fire Department for filling up our mermaid pool, and not to forget Kathleen and the rest of the Chamber for throwing such and AWESOME PARTY! We could not have done it without all of you! The West Indian manatee or "sea cow" is a manatee, and the largest surviving member of the aquatic mammal order Sirenia. This beautiful gentile giant is a wonderful conservation story of how we can protect what we love. I highly recommend everyone to see this amazing creature as it truly is friendly and a lufe changing experience! Though recently reclassified by the State of Florida from endangered to a threatened, Florida Manatees are still susceptible to a variety of threats; from loss of sea grass, to ‘red tide’ and boat strikes. At least 80% of Florida manatees have been hit by boats, some repeatedly and bear scars on their bodies. These “sea cows” communicate with one another through touch, as well as through patterns of squeaks and squeals. Such signals allow a mother to recognize her calf, and thus to teach the calf necessary survival skills early in life.
