Fun fact Around 20 million years ago large chunks of of central and eatern Europe were covered by a shallow inland sea known as the Paratethys. This includes what is now north-eastern Austria and was home to sea cowls, specifically the dugong Metaxytherium. Here's photos I took of a reconstructed skeleton of Metaxytherium medium displayed at the Lower Austria Museum in St. Pölten.
