The first time I heard Carl Allen was live at Catalina Bar & Grill in Hollywood, at the Cahuenga location (unanimously preferred), back in 1987 with the Donald Harrison-Terence Blanchard Quintet, with Cyrus Chestnut on piano, and Rodney Whitaker on bass. My mentor, the late Harold Batiste took me there, and I was blown away.
