“How could you?” She didn’t know why a woman like Jenny Lind would care what she thought, but Anne had to speak up.
“You hurt my friend, you hurt my family and nearly destroyed everything!”

❝ if you don’t mind me saying, your voice is remarkable. ❞ w.d. was absolutely sure she’d heard it before - how couldn’t she. it was more than possible that jenny lind was sick and tired of hearing about her gift. get, w.d. felt entirely compelled to at least pass his compliments on to the swedish singer. that wasn’t to say he was thrilled to be found in her company as he picked up rogue ropes and brushed the divits in the sand away.
❝ however, mr barnum is otherwise occupied, ❞ w.d. glanced over his shoulder towards backstage briefly. the last he’d seen, or technically heard, of barnum had been when he was arguing over fireworks with carlyle. learning that their boss was leaving them without so much as a decent goodbye definitely stung. he understood the attraction of jenny lind - more marketable, more accepted to the audiences that barnum dreamt of reaching - but he couldn’t help but feel betrayed by both of them.

‘ it’s not over before it’s too late. ‘ she sighed, shaking her head. finally, her gaze met the woman’s. ‘ there is NOTHING LEFT to analyze. ‘

“Ms. Lind, I really enjoyed your show the other night. You truly sing like a nightingale.”
❛ miss lind. ❜
he hadn’t expected to see her here -- in this hotel, yes, but in the bar, of all places. ever since the fire -- since he’d woken in the hospital to be informed of a scandal, of the circus’ sudden demise, of everything that had happened since, he’d had little time to give thought to what jenny had been doing in the wake of the tour. he’d heard of her solo tour, of course, but with rebuilding the circus and taking care of his own healing . . . she hadn’t been on the forefront of his mind. but now, he took a moment to look her over, noting the unmistakable sadness in her gaze, and he was seating himself by her before he could fully process it.
❛ . . . may i buy you a drink ? ❜

“I usually wear my costume while practising,” she explained, chin lowered in deference. Ruby knew well that Jenny was a great performer, revered and respected across the globe, while Ruby herself was lucky if a man who owned more than one top hat saw her as anything besides a performer. “I had come here in the middle of a rehearsal, so I hope you forgive my garish colors.”

Olive weaved through the crowed of people, tugging her skirts out of her way so she wouldn’t trip. It was bad enough she was at least a head shorter than everyone else in the room, she didn’t need to fall and get treaded on on top of that. At least nobody recognized her.
She had to keep reminding herself why she was here: to tell off Phineas. She saw what he was doing, no, she knew exactly what he was doing, hiding his sideshow in the back so nobody would stare or make a scene. She’d seen it a hundred times before and boy did that make her blood boil. They deserved to be seated where Jenny Lind was actually visible just as much as anybody else in that theater. More, even, with how hard they all worked for him. But a small selfish part of her wanted to take a detour to greet Miss Lind, having studied her voice a considerable amount of her life. Just a small detour before getting back to confronting her employer but she kept reminding herself that’s not why she was here.
As it turned out, she wouldn’t need a detour because in attempting to dodge a considerably voluminous flared skirt, she backed directly into the singer.
“Oh – ! I am SO sorry! I didn’t–” She snapped her head back towards the woman she had tried to avoid and back to Jenny. What was she doing? This was the opposite of what she wanted to do meeting Jenny Lind.
EMMY was always meticulous in preparing for a show , everything ALWAYS had to be perfect . it stemmed from many things , habit , worry , something to PREOCCUPY herself with . . . whatever she needed in the moment . she stretched her back , twisting her torso before bending backwards and grabbing the back of her ankles . as she let a breath leave her lips she locked eyes with a woman she recognized as the one in the ads mr . barnum had taken out a few days prior . she hadn’t gone to watch her sing , not with arthur , but emmy lou had heard from the others how wonderful the show was .
❛ ❛ MISS lind , right ? ❜ ❜ emmy smiled and straightened herself out of her back bend . ❛ ❛ i’ve heard wonderful things about you ! lettie says you have the voice of an angel ! ❜ ❜
