New scenes can give fresh insights...

I was discussing the Christmas special with @snoopctm and this line of Sister Julienne’s leapt out at me.  The preceding line is -  “I am a religious Sister”.  This is something Shelagh is able to identify with having shared the same vocation as Sister Julienne for 10 years.  As we were talking, I had a sudden revelation about another scene that gives a whole new level of clarity to that scene...

Shelagh as Sister Bernadette is discussing resources for the clinic.  She is unable to express what she wants, even though it is not for her personal benefit.  Dr Turner presses her to say what the clinic wants but she cannot do that.  He then changes tack and switches his question from wants to needs.  Wanting is a desire whereas needing is a practical requirement.  As a religious Sister expressing a want is forbidden and as it seems in this case, regardless of context.  

The familiarity of this scene in the growing revelations of Sister Bernadette has been much talked about.  However, the words of Sister Julienne being "not allowed to want” add a new dimension to Sister Bernadette’s struggles in series 2.
