usopp-cowardice and comfort
im rewatching one piece from the beginning and something that really stuck out to me is that usopps cowardice is his best lie. him being openly afraid of nothing is a pecifically done for others to be comforted and reassured and it's a consistent thing from the beginning up into elbaf, and i think the actual skill he learned during the timeskip was to trust himself, i really do think the timeskip was both physical and mental skills like robin learning how to trust others that's why she was paired specifically with the revolutionary army but that's another post for another day.
okay back it up wtf do i mean him being a coward is a lie that's like half his character?? i noticed during the episode where he sets off with the strawhats and we see his backstory with his mom is that the lie specifically came out of an attempt to comfort his mom. all he could do as a young child is give her hope, hope that one day her husband would come back, spend her last days with her and usopp making it easier on him. usopp desperately wanted to keep that hope that everything would be alright alive for his mother. as a kid he was brave enough to confront the sadness of his mother's sickness and his father's abandonment head on, to the point he DID SOMETHING about it, even if it wasn't the best plan considering he was like what 7 at the most in the flashback??
another example in the same episode is when he doesn't run through town yelling that day the villagers mentioned missing him but also they say specifically i hope he's okay. why's that important? the village relied on his routine for comfort, they knew as long as usopp was out there doing his morning routine running through the town that everyone was okay, there's no danger because it's not an actual cry of emergency, not a bunch of people panicking screaming pirates are here it's just the neighbors kid he does it every morning if he's out there doing his thing it's an annoyance as much as it is a reassurance
then finally i want to mention how consistently from the beginning when it is a serious situation he actively runs towards danger. he let the townspeople know kuros plan, when they didn't believe him he decided to go after kuro alone, not knowing the crew would help him, when the hypnotist guy w heart glasses ran from the fight usopp went AFTER him, when the courageous usopp pirates attacked kuro but it didn't work usopp came in and saved them, a 17 year old with absolutely zero fighting experience taking on a man who's been a pirate for over a decade and winning just because he had to protect his friends
minor spoilers for egghead but his bravery is also shown post timeskip as well one of his BEST moments by far is in egghead during the gorosei fight where the horse guy goes after robin, while nami grabs robin and chopper creates a shield for them to run behind USOPP IS THE ONE ATTACKING THE GOROSEI!!! him facing off against one of the most powerful villains with a straight face, actively seeking out his full attention to get him to attack usopp instead of his friends
we consistently see time and time again usopp never actually turns away from danger, or emotional stuff, or pain. from losing his mother to facing against yonkos gorosei and gods knights he always faces these things head on, the only actual example of usopp showing cowardice is during the water 7/enies lobby arc where he does actively avoid an emotionally painful situation with losing the going merry and then not wanting to face the pain of hurting his friends by lashing out from the situation, but even then all it takes is zoro reminding him that they don't hate him, he can apologize and fix the situation, and he DOES!!
and the comfort part, i already talked about the beginning with the his mom village people but with the strawhat crew and their friends and allies his acts of panic and cowardice actively works as reassurance that a situation is going well, what do i mean? if usopp is scared and running that almost always means the situation is under control, and it actively helps the people around him including his crew know how the situation is going while they're in their own fights, because a quiet and intensely focused usopp ALWAYS means the opposite.
it works as communication and reassurance during battle the exact same way as luffys loud laughs and whoops of excitement do, if you can hear luffy from across the battlefield everything is going great, another example in enies lobby is when they break in the beginning area and luffy is just taking out marines left and right he's giggling having a good time. the others know everything is well and to keep going, it lets nami know she's good to sneak around for important things, it lets chopper know he's good to continue lending aid instead of stepping into the fight, vs when they get inside to fight cp9 luffy during his fight w lucci is mad as FUCK he's not yelling excitedly, that lets people know tides are shifting it's all hands on deck so every non fighter jumped in. usopps panic does the EXACT same thing
i also think that outside of battle it actually does help the others regulate their emotions, this one is def more opinions based but he CONSISTENTLY breaks up awkward tense or scary situations with his panic in a way that gets everyone's attention off of the issue and onto a more simple "oh i gotta comfort usopp again" i especially notice this with nami, robin, and also ZORO i really often notice usopp clinging onto zoro as a distraction for zoro either to get the attention off of him or to bring his attention towards him and have his emotions be fond annoyance instead of everything else making zoro stressed. and i especially love this because zoro is one of the most tense members of the crew he really takes the responsibility as first mate seriously, so it ties into my other point of his panic letting know everything is going well, zoro can recognize when usopp is clinging to his shoulders that "okay, im not alone, we got the situation handled i can relax a bit"
which is very similar to the silent comfort he gives robin when he reacts terrified to her ideas, i know sometimes it's silly i do love them, but in situations where robin is genuinely spiraling and believing that the worst has happened, when he panics its this silent communication of "hey, everything is still going to plan we are alright" and it helps robin refocus, and i specifically noticed it in elbaf, minor spoilers but when the gods knights start attacking the kids and saul usopp not only doesn't panic but he doesn't respond to robin's growing distress with cowardice and panic, he responds to her distress with bravery and helping figure out the situation because there is no comfort to be offered at the moment due to it being an all hands on deck emergency situation
basically usopp is actually lying about being a coward, he's the bravest person i know i love him dearly im holding him to my chest and jumping up and down like nami when they got united that's my MAN
