Why did they have to make the Seb adoption thing about Gordon though? I didn’t like that why would Aaron think he’s anything like Gordon it’s like he’s trying to prove something
Ok I’ve waited a little while to answer this because I wanted to make sure I put my words together right, but I’m glad you came to me to ask this even if you were just ranting
I get why Aaron said that, why that’s a thought floating in the back of his mind, because there is no way a person becomes a parent and doesn’t think about their relationship with their own parents. The biggest fear I have about having kids one day is that they’ll end up looking at me the way I used to look at my parents. I know I’ll never be like my mum and Dad and I’ll never hurt my child the way they hurt me, but it’s still there in my head, the idea that because I wasn’t a happy child I won’t know how to a raise a child to be happy, or that I won’t be good enough and they’ll hold resentment for me like how I resent my parents. Being sexually exploited by a parent is going to affect how Aaron (and me, and all abuse survivors) look at parenthood. We have our abusers blood in our veins, and while I truly don’t believe blood matters in family there’s still that awful thought of them being a part of you. Aaron never wants Seb to see any of Gordon in him, from the abuse to the lying to the manipulation, none of it, but there’s going to be that small nagging worry because Gordon is his father and what he did will stay with Aaron for the rest of his life.
I know a lot of people will appreciate that line for what it was and move on, and I should too I mean it was only 1 line in a soap, but it matters to me that it doesn’t get twisted as if Aaron really thinks he’s capable of doing what Gordon did. He doesn’t think that, he doesn’t have ANYTHING to prove, but what he does have is a son that he refuses to do anything but love unconditionally. And in a way, that is to prove something; it’s to prove Gordon wrong, it’s to prove wrong the the person he used to be who thought Gordon would never stop haunting him. Aaron acknowledging his own horrible childhood and his determination to give Seb the best life isn’t a bad thing, it’s a wonderful thing, because it shows that he knows he deserved better as a child, and he’ll make sure his kids will never know what it’s like to carry a painful childhood in your heart for a lifetime. It’s relief that even if you can’t make your own childhood better, you can do your best to make sure your own kids can’t even imagine what you went through.
Please don’t make out like Aaron saying that is a bad thing when really it’s him showing his own self-worth and understanding that how he was raised doesn’t have to determine what kind of parent he is. It’s him saying a big fuck you to the people that say “abusers are always people who were abused themselves” and “everybody grows up to be their parents”. Seb will never have a negative parental figure in his life and Aaron is proud of himself for being sure of that, and I’m proud of him too.
