Once Upon a Time Positivity Challenge: Day 20 ➝ sacrifice

I believe Emma was in love with Hook long before this episode. The first time they met, even, Emma sensed a kindred spirit in Killian, and she forced herself to act based on cynicism rather than trust her instincts. Despite her best efforts, she and Killian have only gotten closer since then.

Throughout 3B and some of 3A, Emma and Killian’s interactions are suggestive of a relationship. They flirt. They hang out. She entrusts him with her child. They have basically been a couple since New York…just without the kissing.

The main obstacle preventing Emma from letting others in is fear of abandonment. She believes that when you love someone, they will eventually leave you. That is what life has taught her….

Then here is this pirate–a species known for impulsiveness, for taking off whenever the fancy hits–who vows to win her heart. Emma has feelings for him. She trusts him. With her life, even. But even so, she cannot see the future. How can she be certain that he will stay? He may love her, but love does not guarantee commitment. What if he wakes up tomorrow itching for adventure, to take to the seas, wherever the wind may carry him?

When Killian declares that he traded his ship for her, Emma’s last defenses fall. His sacrifice was not some grand gesture. It was an entirely selfless act. He severed ties to his former life in exchange for the opportunity to reunite Emma with her family, expecting nothing in return. Emma realizes that Killian’s feelings for her are not some passing fancy, but that he truly loves her and would do anything for her. He willingly abandoned his pirate’s life for whatever chance at love Emma was willing to give.
