Kirk also does flirt w/ McCoy, McCoy just has an attitude of, "Sure, Jim. You do you," and is otherwise blithe to it. (Avon struck me as a cross between Bones and Spock, personally!)

Avon is Avon. Comparing him to characters from other franchises, even franchises his is a parody of, is a pointless exercise. In my rarely-humble opinion.

I don't think McCoy and Kirk's interactions are especially flirty, McCoy's just southern and Kirk's just, well, Kirk. I don't think it registers to either of them as "this is flirting" even when it looks like it from the outside.

This is going to sound strange, but I cannot ship Kirk/Spock. I ship Blake/Avon, Lister/Rimmer, & Jim/Artie (tho Artemus is more of a cross between McCoy & Scotty), but Kirk/Spock makes me wince. Kirk is the person Avon accuses Blake of being. He's an idealistic manipulator whose first instinct is to lovebomb his enemies (if that doesn't work, he just bombs them!), & I think he views Spock as an unlit powder keg he needs to constantly dowse. (Bones tries to needle Spock into doing shadow work!)

I don't personally ship Kirk and Spock, either. But that's more of me not being able to really ship Kirk with anyone, he's too focused on his ship and his crew to have room for an intense romantic relationship in his life, and that's okay.

Kirk being the person Avon accuses Blake of being is an interesting perspective, I had noticed that the Blake/Avon dynamic being not unlike the Kirk/Spock dynamic, but without Bones there to temper both of them into being able to get some work done between butting heads. But I suppose I can see there's more room for the Kirk/Blake idealism in the Star Trek universe, so it goes further. I'm not sure about the "unlit powder keg" part, though.
