Valleydale Christmas Set Design

In August our Creative team began to discuss our ideas for programming and design of the Christmas season. This Christmas was the first time our whole team was able to oversee the entire planning process from concept to completion, and it really seemed to pay off.

Our church campus is located in an area with several mountains, and I had attempted to think of ideas to incorporate our beautiful surroundings into a set design. I approached two of our incredible volunteers, Michelle and Van, with an idea I had seen on the incredible Church Stage Design Ideas website involving real trees. After a month of thinking about it, we decided to use two real birch trees, spray painted white, with wreaths on the whitewashed pallet wood wall in shades of silver and white. (I always try to keep an eye toward sustainability, so the trees we chose to cut down on our property were dead already. We didn’t want to take down any living trees.) The trees were anchored in galvanized washtubs with about 120 lbs (1.5 bags) of Quickrete on each side. Given the very short timeframe for construction and limited staffing, I was very happy with the result.

We also wanted our branding to reflect this vision of “classy” Christmas, so we worked with one of our favorite graphic designers, Laurel Dawn Berryhill, to create graphics that we used in print, social, and visual media throughout the season.

Using her amazing designs, I created a suite of graphics for use in our worship services.

All in all, it was a great rollout, and I’m very thankful for our staff and volunteers who helped make all of this such a success.
