Today the Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee is observed on the the 56th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday, when marchers crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the first Selma-to-Montgomery March as part of a movement for voting rights. Marchers were met by Alabama State Troopers and a mob of white men, recruited by the county sheriff, who beat them with clubs and sprayed them with tear gas. I am grateful that my grandparents raised me to understand that we are all part of the same family, sharing our short lives on this beautiful planet. I met C. T. Vivian in Indiana in 2011, at a celebration of the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and with so many of the people I’ve been fortunate to meet, wish we had more time. Rev. C. T.
