Thousands of unionists marched through Melbourne's CBD this morning in support of 55 workers sacked by Carlton & United Breweries earlier this year. They were told they could reapply for their jobs at up to 65 percent below their previous wage rate.
The dispute is symptomatic of a broader trend β of the hard-won gains in wages and conditions won by previous generations of workers being undermined by big corporations trying to squeeze out ever more profit into the pockets of owners and investors. The workers and their supporters have vowed to continue the fight.
Red Flag asked some workers why they attended:
"So it doesn't happen to the rest of us. We need to boycott their products, stick together." β Kevin, 34, ETU member (John Holland)
"It's just going to be a flow-on effect for all industries. It's corporate greed. They've been doing this for years. How would every other sane person feel?" β Daniel, 29, ETU member (EQ Tower)
"I don't believe in the middle man getting stuffed over. The rich are getting richer; the poor are getting poorer." β Daniel, 25, ETU member (EQ Tower)
