My family are workers and farmers, Black people who worked the soil’, he told me. ‘I am a doctor and a surgeon because of the revolution. And because of it, I am at one of the main medical centres of the country’. He looked directly into my eyes and said, ‘There are people who are against the revolution. But there are many more of us who are for it. And we are not afraid’.”

Before the Cuban Revolution’s success in 1959, there was strict racial segregation, only ~30% of Cubans received appropriate daily nutrition, ~90% of utilities (water, energy, etc) were owned by U.S. corporations, almost every beach was private property for vacationing Americans, illiteracy was 56% (only 30-40% in the countryside). Before the Cuban Revolution’s success the Cuban economy was mafia (that is to say, criminal enterprise) owned gambling, tourism, and sex tourism; every airline in America had cheap, weekend flights so that white American men could fly down to Cuba and rape hyperexploited Afro-Cuban women and sex workers for a Saturday night without the wife.
Segregation no longer exists in Cuba, it was overturned the same week that the Movimiento 26 de Julio took power. Today the Cuban people decide what they pay for their own utilities, and these services are run not for profit maximization but to meet the people’s needs. Today the Cuban people own their beaches as public land, today the literacy rate is 99.75%, today Afro-Cuban women are doctors, professors, teachers, and leaders instead of being cornered into sex work and an early grave.
End the Blockade, Let Cuba Live!
For science and medicine to flourish and benefit the people, we must call to an end to the sixty years of US blockade on Cuba.
For thirty consecutive years the United Nations General Assembly has voted in favor of lifting the US blockade on Cuba. In the recent vote in November 2022, 185 countries voted in favor of lifting the blockade, and only two countries, the United States and Israel, voted in favor of sustaining the blockade. It is estimated that the last sixty years of the US blockade has cost Cuba 1.3 trillion dollars. It is impossible to overestimate how difficult this has made the construction of socialism in Cuba, and the development of their healthcare system and medical sciences in particular.
As Cuba’s Ministry for Public Health reports,
[Cuba] is denied the right to acquire technologies, raw materials, reagents, diagnostic means, medicines, devices, equipment and spare parts necessary for the best functioning of its National Health System, which must be obtained in geographically distant markets or through a third country, with an increase in costs.
Technologies from the United States or with more than 10 percent of components from that country cannot be acquired by the Island, which has a negative impact on healthcare.
In some cases, it is necessary to send patients abroad at a much higher cost than doing the procedure in national territory, if the technology were available.
There are a plethora of examples to point to where the blockade prohibits Cuba from accessing medicine, technologies, equipment, etc. that it would need to save or improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of Cubans. American companies and manufactures with more than 10 percent of American capital backing it frequently ignore, and sometimes explicitly reject, Cuba’s requests for purchasing their products.
This is happening in Cuba. Each day it passes it looks more like Gaza.
