CUESOUL SOOCOO Series 58″ 19oz Maple Pool Cue with Cue Tip 12.75mm/11.5mm
DAY 3 of 5 of the 5 Day Photography Challenge: This photo was taken February 20, 2016 with my Nikon D5300.
"Man, you were all over it. You were right there."
"Nah, I missed it," I said... expressing my frequent inability to double out in a game of 01. If I recall correctly, I was aiming at the double five. Two darts were respectably close. The third went embarrassingly off course.
Chase, with encouragement, replied to me, "I remember your first night here. You've come a long way!"
(An aside: 01 is a subtraction points-based game in darts. You have to hit the outer ring on a number that is half of your score, once it is low enough, to win).
This was last night at the Monday night darts tournament at Old Nick's Pub. I was paired up with James, who plays in an upper division of a local league. I was playing pretty good myself, one round hitting two consecutive single (outer/green ring) bullseyes. But we ended up in the loser's bracket and couldn't progress beyond our first match up there with Harry and Chase. They wanted vindication for also being in the loser's bracket. And they got it!
I started playing darts in earnest around August or so 2015. I got my first set of quality darts in January of 2016. They are Cuesoul 30g 95% tungsten steel barrels. They are pictured here with the the medium Cuesoul aluminum shafts and Cuesoul slim flights that came with them. I've since switched to playing primarily with Colonial 23g 80% tungsten steel barrels and short aluminum shafts with either Marathon Ice standards, Harrows Max Air, or Harrows Vortex flights. I've been playing seriously a little over a year now, and even when it's been frustrating, I've enjoyed every minute of it.
The instinctive precision of the sport takes time... lots of it, to develop. That challenge, the diversity of the available parts to engineer your ideal setup, and the strategic scoring aspects of 01 and Cricket are all parts of what I love about darts. Oh, and that it's typically in an environment where I can have a good beer. That's a plus. :)
But most of all, like many material things in life, their value increases substantially because of the memories of time spent with people you care about that become attached to them. Darts is something I'm passionate about, and as such, it is something I enjoy sharing with the important people in my life. And the community of ardent players surrounding the sport is one of the most welcoming, positive, and encouraging communities out there!
