In an awesome display of punching power, Thomas Hearns blasted his way to the WBA welterweight title in two one-sided rounds when he dethroned Mexico’s Pipino Cuevas at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit #OnThisDay in 1980. Hearns at 21 years old looked unbeatable with frightening confidence in front of his frenzied home crowd. The vanquished Cuevas summed it up afterwards: “Hearns is too tall and too long to be a welterweight.” Hearn’s is listed as 6ft 1ins, but Emanuel Steward says he is really nearer 6ft 3ins, he had knocked a couple of inches off his height when he turned pro so as not to scare off too many prospective opponents. The fight ended Pipino's four-year reign as WBA champ. His career unravelled after this fight. He lost seven of his next twelve fights and never again fought for a championship. #boxing #BoxingNews #BoxingHistory #CuevasHearns #ThomasHearns (at Joe Louis Arena) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bl-Z6n9gj2h/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1bonukzjxvjj4
