CULINARY EXPERIMENT: CHYAWANPRASH MINI APPLE PIES
THIS IS NOT ENERGY DRINKS, BUT I HAVE NOWHERE ELSE TO PUT THE RECORD OF WHAT I'VE DONE, AND I CAN FIND VERY LITTLE INFORMATION ON COOKING WITH CHYAWANPRASH ONLINE
I MUST PRECEDE THIS RECIPE WITH TWO THINGS: ONE, EMPHASIZING THAT THIS IS ENTIRELY AN EXPERIMENT. I HAVE NEVER MADE THIS BEFORE, AND DO NOT KNOW IF IT WILL BE GOOD. I PUT IT IN RECIPE FORM SOLELY TO SHOW THE STEPS OF MY PROCESS
TWO, I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF CHYAWANPRASH UNTIL YESTERDAY, WHERE I SAW A JAR OF IT ON THE DISCOUNT RACK. THE PACKAGING MADE IT LOOK TASTY, AND IT SMELLS REALLY GOOD
BUT IT ALSO CONTAINED A LAUNDRY LIST OF INGREDIENTS AND ADVISORIES ON THE BACK, SO I DID SOME RESEARCH INTO IT BEFORE USING IT. GOOGLING AROUND TELLS ME THAT EATING TOO MUCH CAN GIVE YOU THE SHITS. HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? THAT I COULD NOT FIND A SOLID NUMBER ON, BUT THIS STUDY GAVE PEOPLE 30 GRAMS OF IT A DAY TRYING TO TREAT PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS, AND IT MENTIONS GOOD RESULTS AND DOESN'T MENTION THEM SHITTING THEIR BRAINS OUT. SO I'M WAGERING I CAN PUT AT LEAST 30 GRAMS OF IT IN WHATEVER I MAKE AND IT'LL BE FINE (MINDING THE FACT THAT THIS STUFF HAS EVEN MORE SUGAR IN IT THAN STRAIGHT HONEY)
SO I MAKE MY FIRST FORAY INTO BAKING WITH THIS STUFF BY MAKING MINI APPLE PIES, BECAUSE IT SMELLS A BIT LIKE ALLSPICE AND I THINK IT WOULD GO REALLY GOOD WITH APPLES. ONLY THREE MINI PIES, THOUGH, BECAUSE IF IT TURNS OUT TO BE GROSS I DON'T WANT TO HAVE MADE A DOZEN OF THEM
CRUST:
2/3 CUPS FLOUR
1 TSP GRANULATED SUGAR
PINCH OF SALT
1/4 CUP SALTED BUTTER, CUBED (IDEALLY COLD BUT I USED ROOM TEMP)
~2 TBSP ICE WATER
FILLING:
2 APPLES
2 TBSP CHYAWANPRASH (~90 GRAMS, 30G PER PIE)
1 TSP CORN STARCH
1.5 TBSP MILK
1 TSP BUTTER
1 TSP LEMON JUICE
1. IN BOWL, COMBINE FLOUR + SUGAR + SALT FOR CRUST. ADD BUTTER, CUT WITH A PASTRY CUTTER UNTIL IT RESEMBLES GRAVEL
2. GRADUALLY ADD ICE WATER WHILE MIXING UNTIL DOUGH FORMS A BALL
3. WRAP DOUGH IN PLASTIC WRAP AND CHILL IN FRIDGE FOR ABOUT HALF AN HOUR. THIS IS ALSO A GOOD TIME TO START PREHEATING THE OVEN TO 425F
4. PEEL + DICE APPLES INTO TINY CUBES, THEN TOSS THEM IN LEMON JUICE
5. IN A SEPARATE, LARGE BOWL, MIX CHYAWANPRASH, CORN STARCH, AND MILK. HEAT FOR 30 SECONDS IN MICROWAVE
6. ADD THE DICED APPLES TO THE MIX AND TOSS THEM UNTIL COVERED. COVER BOWL WITH A PLATE, NUKE FOR ANOTHER 2 MINUTES, THEN MIX IN BUTTER
7. ROLL YOUR DOUGH OUT THIN. CUT OUT THREE 5.2" WIDE CIRCLES (WHICH SO HAPPENS TO BE EXACTLY THE WIDTH OF THE LID TO A 427G TUB OF I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S NOT BUTTER)
8. GREASE YOUR MUFFIN TIN, THEN LINE YOUR MUFFIN TIN WITH YOUR CRUST CIRCLES
9. ADD YOUR FILLING MIX TO THE CRUSTS. USE YOUR EXCESS DOUGH TO COVER THE TOPS AS YOU SEE FIT. I JUST DID STRIPS BECAUSE I DIDN'T FEEL IN THE MOOD TO DO ANY SORT OF FANCIFUL LATTICE
10. BAKE 16-18 MINUTES AT 425F. LET THE PIES COOL COMPLETELY BEFORE TRYING TO REMOVE THEM FROM THE TIN (15-20 MINUTES OR SO)
AND NOW, THE MOMENT OF TRUTH, THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION: HOW DOES IT TASTE?
NOT BAD. A MILDER FLAVOUR THAN I'D EXPECTED, AND THE SWEETNESS IS A BIT MORE SUBDUED THAN I'D EXPECT FOR SOMETHING WITH ~1.7 TIMES AS MUCH SUGAR AS HONEY PER TSP. IT DEFINITELY NEEDS SOME CINNAMON OR NUTMEG OR SOMETHING--I REFRAINED FROM ADDING ANY HERE BECAUSE I WANTED TO SEE WHAT CHYAWANPRASH WOULD TASTE LIKE ON ITS OWN IN THE PIE
ALSO, I DID NOT USE THE IDEAL SORT OF APPLES FOR MAKING PIE. I WAS JUST USING UP THE LAST FEW APPLES I HAD SITTING AROUND. IF I WERE TO REALLY TRY TO DO THIS JUSTICE I WOULD'VE USED A NICE GRANNY SMITH OR SOMETHING
CONSIDERING THE CHYAWANPRASH WAS THE SOLE SOURCE OF SPICES AND SWEETENER IN THE FILLING, AND THAT I WAS NOT USING THE BEST APPLES FOR A PIE, THIS IS REALLY PROMISING. THIS HAS GOT POTENTIAL, JUST NEEDS A BIT MORE STUFF THROWN IN. MAYBE I'LL TRY TO MAKE A FULL SIZE PIE WITH SOME GOOD APPLES USING CHYAWANPRASH LATER
I'LL COME BACK TO EDIT AN UPDATE INTO THIS POST IF EATING THIS MUCH CHYAWANPRASH TURNS MY BOWEL INTO A HELLSCAPE, BUT ASSUMING THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN THEN I'M CERTAINLY GOING TO TRY DOING MORE STUFF WITH THIS
