Borders will become even more critical with the number of migrants expected to rise due to the effects of climate change. According to the 2018 World Migration Report, approximately 405 million international migrants are predicted by 2050.

Welcome to our first 2018 @culturestrike editorial cartoon! Anyone else catch the Golden Globes this last weekend? There's lot to be said about #timesup and all of the actresses who attended the awards show wearing black, but undoubtedly, Oprah's acceptance speech (after receiving the Golden Globe Cecile B. DeMille Award) is the highlight that everyone is talking about. Opinions about Oprah's speech immediately cropped up throughout the Internet. While there was widespread appreciation and support, there was also plenty of know-nothings complaining about Oprah getting political during an awards show, and leftists questioning whether Oprah was the right person to deliver such a potent, important, and timely message. Maybe the presentation was not entirely perfect in messaging and inclusive of all the issues that are important in the social justice realm. But it is a wildly successful moment of cultural intervention. Oprah's reach is unfathomable for many of us. She has influence that many on the left wish we had. She is a cultural icon of our time, and to have her use her platform to further the message of the #metoo and #TimesUp movement is incredibly important. It must have also been a gargantuan undertaking for the activists who organized all the celebrities (including Oprah) to be on message and to make a statement in a high profile awards show. It made the message more culturally visible, and while many may feel like the moment could be co-opted by celebrities who aren't close to the grassroots efforts, the fact that the conversation has now proceeded to be amplified by the likes of Oprah is a big opportunity. Whether you agree or disagree that Oprah was the correct messenger, one thing is for sure: the platform for the conversation around equity for women in our society has just gotten larger, more prominent, and louder. And we think that this is a good thing in the grand scheme of our goals as cultural workers. Kudos and congratulations to the amazing and unmatched Oprah! Artwork by @juliosalgado83. Regrammed: Welcome to another @culturestrike editorial cartoon. Several iterations of the DREAM Act have been proposed this year, since Trump's decision to send Jeff Sessions out in front of cameras to rescind the Obama era executive order. But it seems like the DREAM Act continues to be watered down more and more with every new version/idea of the bill. The latest one asks potential beneficiaries to sign away their rights to defend themselves in the case that they are charged with a crime, triggering DHS with a reason to deport them, for 15 years. In other words, in addition to "extreme vetting" that the bill proposes, those who sign on will be at the complete mercy of DHS' discretion to deport them for any reason for15 years, and if the decision to deport them comes to pass, they cannot defend themselves. DREAMers are today's most sought-after bargaining chips between the ruling political parties. And as time passes, as the situation becomes desperate for persecuted undocumented people, we will be confronted with a path with more obstacles and a higher price tag for legislation that delivers far less and is more damaging to undocumented communities in the United States.  Is this a game you're willing to play?  Artwork by @juliosalgado83. Welcome to another @CultureStrike editorial cartoon! Last Friday, in the even of Hurrican Harvey’s landfall, Trump went on television to announce his pardon of former “Sheriff” Arpaio. Trump explained that he had waited until the storm made landfall to make the announcement, as he was under the assumption that the ratings would be higher, as people were tuned in to keep up with news around the hurricane. As if this wasn’t ridiculous enough, Border Patrol in Texas issued a statement saying that their checkpoints would remain open during the storm, so long as their officers were safe. As people were making their way from the coastal borderlands and away from the approaching storm, it became clear that Border Patrol was using this opportunity to detain any undocumented people or any migrant who didn’t have the appropriate documentation with them. How deeply ingrained is this country’s xenophobia that the President of the United States could go on television to announce his pardoning of one of this country’s most infamous racist power-tripping law enforcement officer as a CATEGORY FOUR hurricane was about to make landfall? How terrified is this country of immigrants that we are okay with Border Patrol checkpoints slowing down the process of people arriving to safety from this year’s most destructive storm if it means that a few undocumented people are detained? This weekend was bad news. Arpaio will not face justice for all the horror that he brought to Maricopa County. Houston cannot seemingly count on 45 for his input to relieve their situation. Border Patrol is cruel and useless. And though this time of year is technically normal and ripe for tropical storms for Texas, they will only get worse as climate change continues to worsen. And as the environment turns against us in these horrible taxing storms, it’s clear that our government has other priorities. This doesn’t bode well for us. Art by @juliosalgado83. Last week, Donald Trump took giant steps backwards away from transgender rights by launching a tweet storm that he formatted as a PSA, intending to ban trans people from serving in the military, all the while referring to them as a “burden.” The backlash was immediate. Though no law has yet been issued that bans trans people from military service, in some way, Trump’s tweets have validated transphobia for many of his followers. Then, the Breakfast Club, a hip-hop radio show from New York city, released an interview with comedian Lil Duval, during which the hosts ask the Duval what he’d do if a woman he’d been sleeping with would disclose that she’s transgender. His response? “I’mma be so mad I’d probably going to want to kill them.” Just days before this interview, the radio show had hosted writer and trans rights activist Janet Mock, who spoke about her book (“Surpassing Certainty”). Not only did we have a president, with access to the largest mouthpiece in the world, deploy a transphobic rant on Twitter, we also had a radio show with one of the largest followings in the nation host and publish an interview in which a guest not just launches into transphobic rhetoric, but also speaks about exacting violence on transwomen.  15 transgender people have been murdered so far in 2017, all of whom are trans women of color. Janet Mock said it best, "It's this deplorable rhetoric that leads cis men, desperately clutching their heterosexuality, to yell at, kick spit on, shoot, burn, stone, and kill trans women of color." It doesn’t help that folks with the cultural platform like the president and The Breakfast Club utilizes transwomen as props. Violence on trans folks, specifically trans women of color, is a reality and it doesn't pop out of thin air. It's deployed into our cultural norms through rhetoric. Art work by @juliosalgado83.
