Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence. Sometimes you have to let go to find yourself. When Caroline walks away from MF, unable to bear Christmas without her mom, she finds herself on an unexpected journey. The world is open to her, but some ties you can't break. Some, you don't want too.

This is quite an old fic, but I only recently stumbled across it and I absolutely ADORE it. I love post-canon fics where Caroline travels the world, and this one is no exception. It begins sometime after Liz’s death, when Caroline decides to leave Mystic Falls and everyone she knew behind to travel the world and take time to mourn. In fact, Caroline’s struggles over mourning her mother are poignant throughout the entire fic, but rather than an angst fest, feelings of hope and healing weave between the words instead, and as the story progresses, not only does Caroline begin to move on but she also reunites with Klaus when she’s ready and their relationship begins to blossom in a way it never did within Mystic Falls. It’s just so beautiful. This fic would be a great one to read at Christmas too - no doubt thanks to it being part of a gift exchange - as Caroline often meets Klaus at Christmas through the years and Caroline struggles with the holiday due to her mother’s absence. The Mikaelson siblings are also present, and if not, are mentioned and referenced in regards to their antics, which warms my heart. Another particular trope in the story which I LOVE is Klaus finds out about Damon’s transgressions against Caroline. So forewarning, there is some Implied/Referenced Rape/Non-Con but it doesn’t go into detail, and the way Klaus finds out (by accident may I add) is AMAZING. You’ve got to read it. It’s like my favourite reveal ever, I think I squealed when I first read it, tis amazing. Also, because if that wasn’t enough, a Wolf!Klaus also makes an appearance, which is a rarity in the fandom and a detail I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR LIKE YESYESYESYES GIVE ME THE ORIGINAL HYBRID PEOPLE!!!

So yeah, overall this is a real banger of a fic and I’d rec it over and over if I could.

Yeah, I worked from home most of the week last week instead of going into the office like usual because it’s been snowing and we live at a bit higher elevation so we usually get it worse than in town, and if you can work remotely instead of driving in it, work remotely, ya’ know. So I had no idea anything had gone down. He messaged me on FB earlier today and told me he’d been let go on Friday. I talked with him for a while, and he said he’d just made too many small mistakes and then accidentally triggered a potential safety event (i.e. made a mistake that could have impacted a patient’s safety, though fortunately it was caught early and no harm was done). He said the job is very detailed, and he’s detail oriented but felt like he had kind of got oversaturated/reached his breaking point. He didn’t blame anyone other than himself, and tbh, I don’t know if this is the case, maybe he got loads of really good training, but one of the issues at this place is that there isn’t really any standardized training, and there are lots of cases where, because of staffing issues, you get stuff yeeted at you with very little idea of how to do it, and you just have to muddle through and hope you don’t screw up too badly. It’s happened to me personally a couple of times. And all the managers just have too much to do and too many employees to oversee. Not really anyone’s fault, just kind of the nature of where we’re at as a healthcare organization right now, just struggling to keep our heads above water.

We shared a cubicle wall and would chat a lot about fandom stuff; he’s very into Star Wars and very open about reading fanfiction and participating in fan spaces, so he’d talk to me a lot about that sort of thing. Some people were obviously weirded out by how open he was about enjoying that sort of thing as an adult man, but obviously I don’t have a problem with it, so we chatted a lot. I’ll miss talking nerd shop over the wall.

An Unlikely Favor

Caroline considered that, weighed the bits and pieces of conversation she had overheard over the past few weeks. She wasn’t sure she could trust him, there was too much rage and too much violence in him, but there was something to be said of the enemy of your enemy. 

Her mother was dead and Caroline would rather face a quick death than something long and lingering. It was likely the witches would tell him what she was anyway, they did so love to gloat.

 Leaning against the bars, she rolled her lip between her teeth. “And what are you, Klaus, that they need a dragon’s death to contain you?” 

 He went motionless across from her, heart and lungs and muscle going still in a way no human or witch or werewolf could hope to mimic. 

“A dragon.” 

 She bared her teeth at him, letting the truth of her show in her eye. The world went bright and vibrant, and for a moment he was so pretty her lungs ached with it. But she tucked away her own personal greed and power, refusing to let it color the darkness of her cell. “I am too young to give them what they want, though I imagine they see that only as a minor complication. Another decade or so will change the potency of my magic and they are foolish enough to believe they can keep me that long.”

Summary: Caroline Forbes has known Klaus Mikaelson longer than some countries had existed, had wanted him nearly as long. But Klaus was not a monster easily hoarded. Yet with the breaking of his curse, perhaps circumstances had finally changed.

Why you should read: Caroline is a dragon. Need I say more? 

I am a sucker for a fic where Klaus and Caroline have known each other for centuries. This fic delivers that. It is an age old friendship born out of tragedy and has lasted lifetimes. Upon their meeting, they saved one another and it created a trust and bond that would be hard to break. There is a tension that sizzles between them and each have done favors for the other during those long centuries. 

Between killing witches and century long hunts, those favors are the heart of the story. Caroline hunted after the moonstone for Klaus but was never able to find it. When Klaus breaks his hybrid curse and tracks Caroline down, he asks her to stash the moonstone in her hoard. 

She is less than pleased with this; not just because she failed in finding it but because it is ugly. 

Caroline’s hoard is very important to her. Her collections, gifts and beautiful things that she surrounds herself with is very on-point with her character and really makes us believe that this is the Caroline we know and love. There is a possessiveness to it that burns inside her and when Klaus presents her with a painting she had spent decades hunting, she knew that she wanted to add Klaus to her hoard. To claim him as her own- even when he asks another favor that would be very hard for Caroline to give.

There is so much to this story and the layers it adds if beyond fantastic. The way it weaves into cannon and yet feels as though it could belong in its own universe is beautiful. It is defiantly a story you should click on and read for something that is both an easy read but holds a depth to it that makes it unforgettable.

KC + Bed Sharing

When Klaus is shot in the line of duty while protecting his princess, Caroline refuses to leave his side in the hospital. She must have fallen asleep in the chair next to his bed, though, because she wakes to him carding his fingers through his hair. Too relieved to think too clearly, she crawls into bed with him, tears flooding the pillow they end up sharing as they fall back asleep. 

The rookie nurse who comes to check on them during rounds should make her move, but they were just so cute.
