Hello! This is a question for a little sister, from a big sister, to everyone's favourite big sister! Right now my sister is graduating highschool and because of the coronavirus situation everything has been really hard on her. I think it's reminding her a lot of the time we had to homeschool (it was a rough time for her) right now she's really depressed and I just want to help her, she doesn't like talking about feelings. I've been depressed a lot but we deal with it differently. Suggestions?
Just a bit of follow up, she's a very physical and athletic person and we're lucky enough to live somewhere where restrictions are lifting. I'm going to take her out to the beach today! She got diagnosed with severe scoliosis in the past year and had to give up what made her happy (she was a competitive dancer of 10 years) I'm physically disabled so what I can do with her is limited but I've been trying to help with self esteem by being really bad at stuff she's amazing at so she can teach me!
You are the sweetest big sister and I love you for it!
Is it possible if you and your sister could get in touch with her graduating classmates and some of their teachers to create some sort of an online prom thing or a virtual graduation party? I know it’s not as fun as being there in person but maybe some of them will have some creative ideas on how to make it fun and memorable.
It’s cute that you’re intentionally trying to be bad at the things she’s good at, but if she catches on, TRY to be good. There’s a certain level of pride that comes with seeing people you taught or mentored succeed.
During the first week of quarantine, a lot of people started baking bread or learning new skills around the house. You could bring that up again. It’s more fun to learn something new when you have someone to learn with. Start learning a language together and practice it on one another and quiz each other.
Finally, just be there for her. At the end of the day, you may do everything in your power to help her, but it’s still a sucky situation. Sometimes just talking to someone or having the presence of a loved one helps in more ways than you can think.
