Starting Charm Casting
Charm casting, aka curio casting, is the divination practice of tossing small objects into a defined area and diving meaning from where and how they land. Like most self-directed systems, it can be a little wild getting started. Here's how you can get going quickly and then build up and out.
To start, collect some charm objects, 3-10 is a great beginning range.
Assign each charm one meaning to start.
Make your reading area somewhat contained so the charms don't fly.
Then assign your reading area 2-4 spaces.
Start there. The charms always mean one thing, and they always mean it in relation to where they land.
So if you have a shoe that means travel, and your two areas are yes/no, then that's very simple and easy to be getting on with.
Getting Advanced
Complexity comes from more charms, more areas, different orientations of the charms altering meaning, and relating the charms within areas to each other. Just build up til you find your happy place. Some ideas for increasing complexity:
Casting charms repeatedly to test landing orientations, then interpreting the charm's meaning depending on how it lands, like a reversed tarot card.
Choosing a selection of charms for each reading, either with a set number or casting one for each position, like a Tarot spread.
Tarot suit meanings for areas in a center quad box with yes/no endzones on either side.
Assigning unique personas (gods, monsters, devils, pop, ancestors) to charms, allowing you to interpet them as having a conversation with the other charms, or use their charm for spirit messages from the.
Assigning entirely different meanings to one charm in different orientations.
Hope this helps someone!
